President Biden, political figures, and celebrities gathered in New York City on Monday to mourn Tatiana Schlossberg, the 35-year-old granddaughter of former President John F. Kennedy, who died following an 18-month battle with acute myeloid leukemia.

The private, invitation-only funeral service was held at The Church of St. Ignatius of Loyola on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, drawing a remarkable assembly of political and cultural figures paying their respects to the environmental journalist and author.

Former President Joe Biden and his wife, former First Lady Jill Biden, were seen leaving the church after the service. John Kerry, former Secretary of State under Barack Obama and climate envoy under Biden, was also in attendance. The two high-profile Democrats were joined by numerous influential figures from across the political spectrum, including Obama’s political strategist David Axelrod, Massachusetts Senator Ed Markey, and former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

The service also attracted prominent personalities from media and entertainment circles. Late-night hosts David Letterman and Seth Meyers, The New Yorker editor David Remnick, fashion designer Carolina Herrera, and musician Jon Batiste were all photographed at the solemn gathering.

Schlossberg, the daughter of Caroline Kennedy and Edwin Schlossberg, was a Yale University graduate who later earned a master’s degree in American history from the University of Oxford. She established herself as a respected voice on climate and environmental issues throughout her career.

In November 2025, Schlossberg shared her cancer journey in a heartfelt essay published in The New Yorker. She revealed that doctors discovered her disease while she was hospitalized after giving birth to her second child. “My parents and my brother and sister, too, have been raising my children and sitting in my various hospital rooms almost every day for the last year and a half,” she wrote.

After being told she had “a year, maybe” to live, Schlossberg expressed her deepest concern about her children—that they would grow up without memories of her. “My kids, whose faces live permanently on the inside of my eyelids, wouldn’t remember me,” she wrote, adding that her son “might have a few memories, but he’ll probably start confusing them with pictures he sees or stories he hears.”

Schlossberg married George Moran in 2017, and together they had two children—a son and a daughter. Moran was present at the funeral, along with Schlossberg’s immediate family including her mother Caroline Kennedy, father Edwin Schlossberg, sister Rose Schlossberg, and first cousin Joe Kennedy III.

Acute myeloid leukemia, the disease that claimed Schlossberg’s life, is an aggressive form of blood cancer that affects the bone marrow and progresses rapidly. Despite advances in treatment options, the disease remains challenging to treat, particularly in cases diagnosed at advanced stages.

Schlossberg’s passing marks another tragic chapter for the Kennedy family, which has endured numerous public tragedies across generations. As the granddaughter of President Kennedy and First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Tatiana represented a younger generation of the storied American political dynasty.

Her work in environmental journalism earned respect in professional circles, where she was known for thoughtful analysis of climate issues. Rather than trading on her famous name, colleagues say Schlossberg built her reputation through diligent reporting and insightful commentary on pressing environmental challenges.

The private nature of the funeral service reflects the Kennedy family’s attempt to balance their public prominence with personal grief—a challenge the family has faced repeatedly throughout its history in American public life.
