Attacker at correspondents’ dinner was said to be targeting top officials

The accused gunman who attempted to storm the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner ballroom traveled across the country before the incident and is believed to have been targeting members of the Trump administration, according to acting Attorney General Todd Blanche.

Speaking on Sunday, Blanche revealed that investigators believe the suspect made a cross-country journey, traveling by train from California to Chicago before continuing to Washington, D.C. Upon arrival, the suspect checked in as a guest at the hotel hosting one of Washington’s most prestigious annual social events.

While authorities have not officially released the suspect’s name, two law enforcement officials familiar with the matter have identified him to The Associated Press as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen from Torrance, California.

The incident occurred Saturday night when the gunman attempted to charge into the crowded ballroom. Security personnel tackled him to the ground in a chaotic scene that resulted in gunfire. President Donald Trump was immediately rushed off the stage as attendees, including journalists, politicians, and celebrities, sought shelter under tables.

“It does appear that he did in fact set out to target folks who work in the administration, likely including the president,” Blanche said during an appearance on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”
