Federal agents have arrested more than 250 people in a widespread immigration operation across North Carolina, primarily centered around Charlotte, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security announced Wednesday. The operation, which began over the weekend, represents the latest phase of the Trump administration’s aggressive deportation efforts targeting both urban centers and smaller communities nationwide.

“Operation Charlotte’s Web,” as officials have named it, initially focused on Charlotte but expanded Tuesday to include areas around Raleigh, the state capital. By late Wednesday, Raleigh Mayor Janet Cowell reported via social media that “border patrol enforcement appears to have been suspended” in the city, though DHS did not confirm any change to its operations.

The current arrest figures are approximately double what federal officials reported earlier this week. In its statement, the Department of Homeland Security said agencies are continuing to “target some of the most dangerous criminal illegal aliens” living in the country without legal permission.

Federal authorities have provided minimal details about those arrested or the overall scope of enforcement operations across North Carolina. This lack of transparency has left communities uncertain about where agents might appear next, creating widespread anxiety among immigrant populations.

The impact on local communities has been immediate and profound. School attendance has dropped significantly, while small businesses in immigrant neighborhoods have temporarily closed to avoid potential confrontations between customers and federal agents. David Rebolloso, a Mexican American business owner who operates a laundromat in Charlotte, reported that customers abandoned their laundry mid-cycle when agents appeared at a nearby shopping center on Sunday.

“We’re only open because I’m an American citizen, so it doesn’t bother me,” said Rebolloso, who was born in Brownsville, Texas. “But of course, business is down. I have no customers.”

The operation in North Carolina is part of a broader nationwide immigration enforcement push that has sent detention figures to record highs, exceeding 60,000 people. Similar operations have occurred across the country, including a major effort in Portland, Oregon, where more than 560 immigration arrests were made in October.

Resistance to the crackdown has emerged in Charlotte, where approximately 100 protesters gathered Wednesday outside a Home Depot where federal agents had been repeatedly spotted. Demonstrators briefly entered the store carrying signs reading “ICE out of Home Depot, Protect our communities.”

Even as the North Carolina operation continues, federal authorities are already preparing for their next major enforcement action. According to documents obtained by The Associated Press and three sources familiar with the plans, Border Patrol agents are expected to arrive in New Orleans by week’s end to prepare for a two-month operation in southeast Louisiana scheduled to begin December 1. Around 250 federal agents will participate in this upcoming sweep.

Gregory Bovino, the Border Patrol commander who is leading the North Carolina operation, will also oversee the Louisiana enforcement action. Louisiana Republican officials have expressed support for the planned operation, with state party chair Derek Babcock stating it demonstrates a commitment from President Trump and Republican Governor Jeff Landry to “keeping our citizens safe.”

Civil liberties organizations are mobilizing in response. Alanah Odoms with the ACLU of Louisiana stated they are compiling resources to help people understand their rights and coordinating with legal services and community groups. “We urge those with privilege and the opportunity to risk it to stand up for their neighbors and friends,” Odoms said.

The escalating immigration enforcement comes as part of the Trump administration’s broader immigration policy, which has targeted Democratic-led cities from Chicago to Los Angeles, deploying both immigration agents and military personnel in an unprecedented nationwide campaign.
