Federal agents clashed with protesters during a law enforcement operation at an Arizona taco shop on Friday, resulting in injuries and allegations from a newly elected congresswoman who was caught in the confrontation.

The incident unfolded when agents with Homeland Security Investigations conducted searches at several Tucson restaurants as part of what federal officials described as a years-long investigation into immigration and tax violations. As authorities cordoned off the restaurant and began removing boxes from the building, protesters gathered outside, leading to a tense standoff.

U.S. Rep. Adelita Grijalva, who was sworn into Congress less than a month ago following a special election to fill her late father’s seat, arrived at the scene with staff members and claimed she was pepper-sprayed during the altercation.

“While I am fine, if that is the way they treat me, how are they treating other community members who do not have the same privileges and protections that I do?” Grijalva said in a statement posted to social media.

In a video of the incident, Grijalva approached federal agents to question where they were taking people and asked them to stop being aggressive. The footage shows a staffer stepping in front of the congresswoman and turning her away as an agent sprayed nearby protesters. Another clip shows what appears to be a projectile landing near her foot as she walked away.

Grijalva said she was uncertain what substance she was sprayed with but mentioned it caused a lingering cough. Local residents, according to the congresswoman, had intervened “because they were afraid that they were taking people without due process, without any kind of notice.”

Federal officials, however, disputed Grijalva’s account. Department of Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin issued a statement describing the gathered group as a “mob” and denied that Grijalva was directly pepper-sprayed.

“If her claims were true, this would be a medical marvel. But they’re not true. She wasn’t pepper sprayed. She was in the vicinity of someone who was pepper sprayed as they were obstructing and assaulting law enforcement,” McLaughlin wrote. “Presenting one’s self as a ‘Member of Congress’ doesn’t give you the right to obstruct law enforcement.”

According to federal authorities, two agents were seriously injured during the confrontation. Video evidence shows some protesters attempting to prevent federal vehicles from leaving the area, at which point chemical munitions were deployed.

Tucson police reported that federal tactical agents responded to extract investigative special agents from the protest zone. After deploying the chemical agents, federal officers requested emergency support from local authorities to safely exit the area.

This incident is part of a concerning trend of confrontations between members of Congress and federal law enforcement at immigration facilities or during operations. U.S. Rep. LaMonica McIver, a New Jersey Democrat, remains in a legal dispute with the Trump administration following a May altercation at a Newark immigration facility in her district. In another high-profile case, Sen. Alex Padilla of California was thrown to the ground and detained by federal agents in June after appearing at a press conference for Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.

The clash in Tucson highlights ongoing tensions surrounding immigration enforcement actions and questions about transparency and accountability in federal operations. While federal authorities maintain they were conducting legitimate law enforcement activities as part of a broader investigation, community members and the congresswoman have raised concerns about proper procedures and treatment of individuals during such operations.

As investigations into both the law enforcement operation and the subsequent confrontation continue, the incident underscores the polarized nature of immigration enforcement issues in border states like Arizona, where federal actions often face intense scrutiny from both elected officials and community members.
