New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani is facing criticism after reports surfaced about anti-Israel remarks made by a member of his transition team, raising questions about his commitment to combat antisemitism.

According to a New York Post report published Sunday, Hassaan Chaudhary, who was identified as working on Mamdani’s transition team, has a social media history containing numerous anti-Israel posts. These included referring to Israel as “barbaric,” using “Jew” as a slur, and praising Iran’s former President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Chaudhary has apologized for the decade-old posts, stating they don’t reflect his current views and that he looks back on them with “regret.” A spokesperson for Mamdani clarified that Chaudhary serves as Muslim outreach director rather than political director, but did not indicate whether he would remain on the team.

“These comments from over a decade ago are reprehensible and in no way reflect the views of the mayor-elect or this transition,” the spokesperson told Fox News Digital. “The mayor-elect has made this clear internally and consistently during the campaign and transition.”

New York Republican Assemblyman Jake Blumencranz was unequivocal in his assessment, telling Fox News Digital: “Let’s be transparent — this isn’t some innocent staffing mistake. This is who Mayor-Elect Zohran Mamdani is and what his transition team/incoming administration stands for.”

Blumencranz added that “personnel is policy” and warned New Yorkers to “buckle up” if these are the types of individuals being recruited during the transition. “You don’t ‘accidentally’ hire a person who has spent years spewing this kind of hate,” he said.

Inna Vernikov, a Republican New York City councilwoman, also condemned the situation, stating that “useful idiots on the hard left have yet to realize that they’re just small pawns in a big and dangerous game.” She urged Mamdani to understand that “he is no longer a protester” but has “a city of 8 million to govern.”

The controversy comes amid broader concerns about Mamdani’s stance on Israel. During his campaign, the mayor-elect faced scrutiny for his history of criticism toward Israel, dating back to his college days when he founded his school’s Students for Justice in Palestine chapter. In the weeks before the election, hundreds of rabbis signed a letter denouncing his campaign.

Despite these controversies, Mamdani won the election handily. In his victory speech, he attempted to reassure Jewish New Yorkers, stating: “We will build a City Hall that stands steadfast alongside Jewish New Yorkers and does not waver in the fight against the scourge of antisemitism.” The following day, he emphasized that he takes antisemitism “incredibly seriously.”

New York City is home to the largest Jewish population outside of Israel, with approximately 1.6 million Jewish residents, making this controversy particularly sensitive for the incoming administration. The city has also seen a rise in antisemitic incidents over the past few years, according to data from the Anti-Defamation League.

The situation represents an early test for Mamdani, who will need to balance his progressive credentials with his responsibilities to all city residents. Political analysts note that mayoral transitions often reveal the direction an administration might take, with early staffing decisions sending signals about priorities and values.

As Mamdani prepares to take office, the Chaudhary controversy underscores the challenges he’ll face in uniting a diverse city and fulfilling his campaign promises to represent all New Yorkers, regardless of their background or beliefs.

“Every resident of this city, Jewish or not, should be alarmed,” Blumencranz concluded. “This is dangerous, it’s divisive, and it’s a disgrace.”
