Australia’s Ambassador to U.S. to Depart Post Amid Tensions with Trump

Australia’s ambassador to the United States, Dr. Kevin Rudd, will conclude his diplomatic posting in March 2026, according to a joint statement released by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong.

The announcement comes just weeks after a tense exchange with President Donald Trump, who publicly declared, “I don’t like you either. I don’t and I probably never will,” during an official visit by Prime Minister Albanese to Washington in October.

In their statement, Albanese and Wong appeared to defend Rudd’s three-year tenure, noting that he had “delivered concrete outcomes for Australia – during both Democrat and Republican Administrations – in collaboration with our closest ally and principal strategic partner.” The wording seemed to serve as a subtle rebuke to the Trump administration amid strained diplomatic relations.

Rudd, who previously served as Australia’s prime minister, confirmed his departure on social media, expressing gratitude to Albanese and Wong for their “kind remarks.” He indicated that he would remain in the United States, working between New York and Washington on “the future of U.S.-China relations, which I have always believed to be the core question for the future stability of our region and the world.”

The ambassador will return to Asia Society, a prominent nonprofit organization headquartered in New York that focuses on strengthening U.S.-Asia relations. Rudd previously served as the organization’s president and CEO from 2021 to 2023 and was the inaugural president of the Asia Society Policy Institute (ASPI) from 2015 to 2023. In his new role, he will lead the ASPI’s Center for China Analysis, which he established in 2022.

The tension between Rudd and Trump became public during Albanese’s visit to Washington in October. When asked about Rudd’s previous critical comments, Trump inquired whether Rudd was still employed by the Australian government. As Rudd attempted to explain that his remarks were made before becoming ambassador, Trump abruptly cut him off with his blunt disavowal.

Rudd had drawn attention in November 2024 when he deleted several tweets critical of Trump following the president’s election victory. In one deleted post from 2020, while serving as chair of the ASPI, Rudd had described Trump as “the most destructive president in history.” Rudd’s office later explained that the posts were removed to prevent misinterpretation that they reflected his official position as ambassador or the views of the Australian government.

“This has been done to eliminate the possibility of such comments being misconstrued as reflecting his positions as ambassador and, by extension, the views of the Australian Government,” Rudd’s office stated at the time. “Ambassador Rudd looks forward to working with President Trump and his team to continue strengthening the US-Australia alliance.”

Despite the public friction, a Trump administration official told Fox News Digital that Rudd “worked well with President Trump and the administration,” adding, “We wish him well.”

While it remains unclear whether Rudd’s previous criticism directly influenced his departure, the timing suggests that diplomatic pragmatism may have played a role in the decision. The Australia-U.S. alliance remains critically important for both nations, particularly as they navigate complex geopolitical challenges in the Indo-Pacific region amid China’s growing influence.

The relationship between the two countries extends beyond diplomatic personnel to strategic partnerships, including the AUKUS security pact, which involves the transfer of nuclear-powered submarines to Australia—a significant development that positions allied naval power closer to China’s maritime sphere of influence.
