Seventeen transgender Air Force members have filed a lawsuit against the federal government after being denied retirement benefits following their forced early departure under the Trump administration’s transgender ban.

The lawsuit, filed Monday, challenges the Air Force’s August decision to revoke early retirement options for transgender service members who served between 15 and 18 years. According to legal advocates, this reversal contradicts earlier commitments made to these veterans.

GLAD Law, one of the advocacy groups behind the lawsuit, estimates the affected service members now face lifetime losses of up to $2 million each in retirement compensation, in addition to losing critical health insurance benefits.

“These are folks who were going to move on with their lives, have received the OK to do so, and then have that taken away from them once again,” said Michael Haley, a staff attorney with GLAD Law. Haley characterized the policy shift as part of “the general cruelty in attacking transgender people.”

Several plaintiffs had already received official orders approving their retirement and begun transition processes when the benefits were rescinded. Among them is Logan Ireland, a master sergeant with 15 years of service including deployment to Afghanistan, whose early retirement was rejected.

“The military taught me to lead and fight, not retreat,” Ireland told The Associated Press. “Stripping away my retirement sends the message that those values only apply on the battlefield, not when a service member needs them most.”

The lawsuit represents the latest challenge to the administration’s policies targeting transgender military personnel. In May, the U.S. Supreme Court allowed the ban on transgender troops to proceed while legal challenges continue through the courts.

Beyond revoking retirement benefits, the Air Force in August also eliminated opportunities for transgender members to appeal their cases before a board of their peers for the right to continue serving. The Pentagon has since implemented similar policies across other military branches.

The policy changes align with broader efforts by President Donald Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to eliminate what they characterize as diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives within the military. Critics argue these moves unfairly target service members who have demonstrated commitment and sacrifice to their country.

The transgender ban, first announced via Twitter during Trump’s previous administration, has faced numerous legal challenges since its implementation. Military leadership had previously expressed concerns about the impact of such policies on military readiness and morale.

Former military officials have noted that transgender service members have served effectively in various roles, with many receiving commendations for their service. Advocacy groups argue that excluding qualified personnel based on gender identity weakens military capabilities by eliminating experienced service members.

The lawsuit comes amid heightened national debate over transgender rights across multiple sectors, including education, healthcare, and public accommodations. Military service has become a particular flashpoint, with supporters of the ban arguing it maintains combat readiness while opponents contend it discriminates against capable service members.

For the 17 plaintiffs in this case, the lawsuit represents more than a policy dispute—it’s about securing benefits they earned through years of service to their country. Many had planned their futures around the retirement packages previously promised to them, making financial and career decisions based on those commitments.

The case will likely work its way through the federal court system in the coming months, potentially setting precedent for how the government handles benefits for service members affected by policy changes.
