After five years of investigation, the FBI has arrested a suspect in connection with the placement of two pipe bombs outside the headquarters of the Republican and Democratic national committees in Washington on January 5, 2021.

Brian J. Cole Jr., a 30-year-old resident of Woodbridge, Virginia, was taken into custody on explosive charges, authorities announced. The arrest marks a significant breakthrough in a case that has puzzled law enforcement for half a decade and fueled numerous conspiracy theories related to the January 6 Capitol riot.

The FBI and Justice Department credit the arrest to a reinvigorated investigation and fresh analysis of previously collected evidence, rather than new tips or witnesses. Attorney General Pam Bondi described the breakthrough as the result of “good, diligent police work and prosecutorial work.”

Investigators had repeatedly sought public assistance in identifying an individual captured in surveillance footage the night before the Capitol riot. Basic questions about the perpetrator, including gender and motive, remained unanswered for years, as did the potential connection between the pipe bombs and the January 6 insurrection when Trump supporters stormed the Capitol in an attempt to prevent the certification of Joe Biden’s 2020 election victory.

Court documents reveal that investigators used a combination of credit card purchases, cellphone tower data, and license plate reader information to identify Cole. According to the FBI affidavit, Cole’s bank records showed purchases of materials consistent with those used to construct the pipe bombs, including galvanized pipes and white kitchen-style timers. These purchases began in 2019 and continued even after the devices were placed.

The explosive devices recovered from both political headquarters were approximately one foot long and contained gunpowder and metal, according to law enforcement officials familiar with the investigation. The tracking of Cole’s 2017 Nissan Sentra with Virginia plates provided a crucial breakthrough, with license plate readers detecting his vehicle within half a mile of where the bomber was first spotted on foot on the evening of January 5, 2021.

Surveillance footage showed the suspect wearing a light sweatshirt, dark pants, and distinctive sneakers, with a dark backpack slung over one shoulder. The person’s face was obscured by a surgical mask and hood, though investigators believed the individual’s gait suggested they were male.

In a particularly meticulous aspect of the investigation, authorities focused on the suspect’s footwear, identified as Nike Air Max Speed Turfs. After learning that thousands of pairs had been distributed through various retailers, investigators subpoenaed credit card records from Foot Locker and other chains to narrow down potential buyers.

Despite the arrest, authorities have not disclosed a potential motive for Cole’s alleged actions. Questions remain about whether the pipe bombs were directly connected to the Capitol assault that occurred the following day.

Cole, who has no criminal record and was not registered to vote, lived with his mother and other family members in a five-bedroom house in a quiet Virginia neighborhood approximately 30 miles south of the U.S. Capitol. He worked in his father’s bail bondsman office, while his mother is employed as a realtor.

A former high school classmate described Cole as friendly but reserved, stating, “He didn’t stand out. As far as I remember, he was well-behaved and quiet.” Court records indicate that Cole’s parents divorced in October 2020, just months before the alleged pipe bomb incident.

The arrest represents a significant development in one of the lingering mysteries surrounding the events of January 6, 2021, which remains one of the most politically divisive episodes in recent American history. As the case proceeds through the legal system, further details about the motivation behind the pipe bombs and any potential connections to the Capitol riot may emerge.
