President Donald Trump has nominated Fox News Channel contributor Dr. Nicole B. Saphier to serve as the next U.S. Surgeon General, according to an announcement made Thursday on his Truth Social platform.

“Nicole is a STAR physician who has spent her career guiding women facing breast cancer through their diagnosis and treatment while tirelessly advocating to increase early cancer detection and prevention, while at the same time working with men and women on all other forms of cancer diagnoses and treatments,” Trump stated in his announcement.

Trump praised Saphier’s communication skills, noting that she “makes complicated health issues more easily understood by all Americans.” He concluded his announcement with the campaign-style promise that Saphier would help “MAKE AMERICA HEALTHY AGAIN.”

Saphier, a board-certified radiologist, has built her reputation as a medical expert through her work at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York and as a media commentator. She has regularly appeared on Fox News programs to discuss public health issues, medical policies, and healthcare reform.

The nomination comes at a time when public health leadership has faced unprecedented challenges. The Office of the Surgeon General, often referred to as “the nation’s doctor,” plays a crucial role in providing Americans with scientific information on how to improve health and reduce risk of illness and injury.

If confirmed, Saphier would succeed Vice Admiral Vivek Murthy, who has served as Surgeon General under both the Biden and Obama administrations. The Surgeon General oversees the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, a uniformed service of more than 6,000 health professionals who promote public health initiatives nationwide.

Saphier’s nomination reflects Trump’s ongoing effort to assemble his potential cabinet and administration team ahead of the November election. The selection also signals Trump’s focus on healthcare policy as a campaign priority, an area where Republicans have sought to differentiate themselves from Democratic approaches.

Throughout her media career, Saphier has been outspoken on various health policy issues, including pandemic response measures, healthcare costs, and preventative medicine. She has authored books on health policy, including “Make America Healthy Again” and “Panic Attack: Playing Politics with Science in the Fight Against COVID-19.”

The Surgeon General position requires Senate confirmation, which would come only if Trump wins the upcoming presidential election. The confirmation process typically involves hearings before the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, where nominees face questioning about their qualifications and policy positions.

Healthcare industry observers note that the Surgeon General role has evolved in recent decades to become more publicly visible, with officeholders often addressing pressing public health concerns ranging from smoking and obesity to opioid addiction and mental health.

Public health experts emphasize that while the Surgeon General serves as an important national health advocate, the position’s influence derives largely from its bully pulpit rather than direct regulatory authority. The office issues influential health advisories and leads public health campaigns, but works in coordination with other federal health agencies to implement broader policy initiatives.

Trump’s announcement regarding Saphier’s nomination comes as healthcare continues to rank among voters’ top concerns heading into the election, with issues like insurance coverage, prescription drug pricing, and pandemic preparedness remaining priorities for many Americans.
