Passenger Provides Update Amid Deadly Hantavirus Outbreak on Antarctic Cruise Ship

A passenger trapped aboard a cruise ship affected by a deadly hantavirus outbreak has shared an updated statement, expressing cautious optimism despite the ongoing health crisis that has claimed three lives.

Jake Rosmarin, a travel blogger from Boston, is among the passengers aboard the Dutch vessel M/V Hondius, which has been sailing through the South Atlantic after departing from Argentina for Antarctica on April 1. The expedition turned tragic when passengers began falling ill with what has now been identified as hantavirus.

“Other than the two ill passengers that have already been referenced in the media, everyone else onboard is doing well and remains in good spirits,” Rosmarin said in a statement provided to media outlets. “We are hopeful that this situation will be resolved soon.”

This update comes just a day after Rosmarin posted an emotional video to Instagram, where he expressed the passengers’ collective anxiety. “All we want right now is to feel safe, to have clarity and to get home,” he said in the tearful message.

The World Health Organization has confirmed a total of seven cases aboard the ship – two confirmed and five suspected – with three passenger fatalities. Additionally, two crew members are currently ill, and one passenger has been evacuated to intensive care in South Africa.

Rosmarin emphasized that the M/V Hondius is not a traditional cruise ship but an expedition vessel that operates with strict cleanliness protocols, especially given the environmentally sensitive regions it visits. “The vessel is maintained to a very high standard, and suggestions that it is unclean are not accurate,” he stated, countering speculation about the ship’s conditions.

The cruise ship, currently anchored off the coast of Cape Verde, has implemented extensive safety measures to prevent further spread of the virus. These include social distancing, masking requirements, and restricted access to indoor common areas. Passengers can have meals delivered directly to their cabins and are permitted access to outer decks for fresh air.

“We continue to be well cared for, and additional medical provisions and supplies have been brought onboard,” Rosmarin noted, praising the crew’s efforts to keep passengers “safe, informed and as comfortable as possible during this time.”

Hantaviruses comprise a group of viruses primarily carried by rodents that can cause severe respiratory or renal diseases in humans. While typically spread to humans through contact with rodent excreta, the WHO is investigating the possibility of human-to-human transmission in this outbreak – something that is generally considered rare.

“We do believe that there may be some human-to-human transmission that’s happening among the really close contacts, the husband and wife, people who have shared cabins,” explained Maria Van Kerkhove, the WHO’s director of epidemic and pandemic preparedness and prevention, during a press briefing in Geneva.

The timeline of the outbreak reveals that the first illness and death occurred on April 11, more than a week after the ship’s departure from Argentina. The vessel reached Saint Helena on April 22 with the first victim onboard, and the situation has escalated since then.

Despite the concerning nature of the outbreak, WHO officials have stated that there is not a high risk to the wider public. The organization continues to monitor the situation closely as health authorities work to contain the outbreak and facilitate the safe return of passengers.

The M/V Hondius incident highlights the unique challenges faced by expedition cruise ships operating in remote regions, where access to advanced medical care can be limited and evacuation logistics complicated by distance and geography.

For now, Rosmarin and fellow passengers remain in a holding pattern as international health officials and the cruise operator, Oceanwide Expeditions, work to resolve the situation and eventually bring the passengers home safely.
