Music Duo Sachet-Parampara Threatens Legal Action Against Amaal Mallik Over ‘Bekhayali’ Dispute

A simmering dispute in Bollywood’s music industry erupted publicly this week as music composer duo Sachet-Parampara confronted fellow musician Amaal Mallik over claims regarding the hit song “Bekhayali” from the 2019 film “Kabir Singh.”

In a strongly-worded Instagram video posted on Wednesday, the husband-wife duo accused Mallik of making “false, baseless and damaging” allegations about the song’s origin and threatened legal action if he fails to issue a public apology.

“This video could have been a 10-second proof to shut down all rumors, but exposing some people became important for our mental peace,” the couple wrote in their caption, which ended with “SHAME ON YOU AMAAL MALIK.”

The controversy reignited after Mallik claimed in a recent interview with Siddharth Kannan that Sachet-Parampara had used his reference track while composing “Bekhayali.” According to Mallik, he had shared the tune with them via WhatsApp during the film’s production phase. He further alleged that industry “politics” limited his involvement in the film to just one song, “Yeh Aaina,” despite initially being slated to compose six tracks.

Sachet-Parampara categorically denied these allegations in their video response. “This is something we purely created,” they stated. “Every melody, every arrangement, every lyric was done in those sessions. It is a completely original Sachet-Parampara composition.”

To substantiate their claims, the duo shared screenshots of conversations with both Mallik and the film’s production team. They pointedly questioned the logic behind Mallik’s accusations, asking, “We are outsiders. Why would anyone favor us? Why would someone play your track for us?”

The composers also highlighted what they consider inconsistencies in Mallik’s behavior, noting that he had congratulated them upon the song’s release. “You texted us first. You said you were waiting for our song. We didn’t even have your number until you called,” they said, questioning why Mallik would praise them if he believed they had appropriated his work.

The duo also countered Mallik’s insinuation about industry favoritism through music label T-Series. “We had no association with T-Series before ‘Kabir Singh.’ Amaal has been signed with the label since 2015,” they pointed out, challenging the narrative that they received preferential treatment.

“Bekhayali” became one of 2019’s biggest hits, helping propel Sachet-Parampara to prominence in Bollywood’s competitive music scene. The song, performed by Sachet Tandon, featured prominently in “Kabir Singh,” which despite controversy over its content became one of the highest-grossing Hindi films of that year.

The public nature of this dispute highlights the often-complicated attribution issues in India’s film music industry, where multiple composers, lyricists, and producers frequently collaborate on projects.

Sachet-Parampara expressed that Mallik’s allegations had caused significant professional and emotional damage. “This has damaged our reputation. We want an apology from you, in public, because you went public with your claims,” they demanded, adding that they are prepared to take the matter to court if necessary.

“We never cry foul when we lose films or songs. We believe in working harder. But accusing someone without proof? That is unacceptable,” Parampara added in the video.

As of publication, Amaal Mallik, who recently appeared as a contestant on reality show Bigg Boss 19 where he placed fifth, has not responded publicly to the duo’s statements or their demand for an apology.
