In a landmark legal battle highlighting the risks of artificial intelligence in information dissemination, acclaimed Canadian fiddle player Ashley MacIsaac is suing Google for $1.5 million after the company’s AI Overview feature falsely labeled him as a sex offender.

The lawsuit, filed at the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, claims that Google’s AI-generated content wrongfully stated that MacIsaac had been convicted of sexual assault against a woman, attempting to lure a child online for sexual purposes, and assault causing bodily harm. The AI Overview also incorrectly claimed that the musician was listed on Canada’s national sex offender registry.

MacIsaac discovered these false allegations after Sipekne’katik First Nation canceled his scheduled December 19, 2025 performance. The organization cited public complaints based on the erroneous information displayed in Google’s search results as the reason for the cancellation.

The award-winning musician is seeking $500,000 in general damages, $500,000 in aggravated damages, and an additional $500,000 in punitive damages, totaling approximately £1.1 million.

Sipekne’katik First Nation has since issued a formal apology to MacIsaac, acknowledging that their decision was “based on incorrect information generated through an AI-assisted search, which mistakenly associated you with offences unrelated to you.” The organization expressed deep regret for the harm caused to the musician’s reputation and livelihood.

In court documents, MacIsaac’s legal team argues that Google bears responsibility for the AI system’s errors: “As the creator and operator of the AI overview, Google is also liable for injuries and losses arising from the AI overview’s defective design. Google knew, or ought to have known, that the AI overview was imperfect and could return information that was untrue.”

The lawsuit further alleges that Google has neither contacted MacIsaac directly nor offered an apology for the damaging misinformation. “Google’s cavalier and indifferent response to its publication of utterly false statements claiming that MacIsaac committed serious sexual offences, including offences involving children, justifies the award of aggravated and/or punitive damages,” the filing states.

MacIsaac’s legal team emphasizes that Google should face the same liability as if a human spokesperson had made these false allegations: “If a human spokesperson made these false allegations on Google’s behalf, a significant award of punitive damages would be warranted. Google should not have lesser liability because the defamatory statements were published by software that Google created and controls.”

Speaking to Canadian Press, MacIsaac detailed the personal consequences of these false allegations, saying he “feared for my own safety going on stage because of what I was labelled as” and expressed uncertainty about how long these wrongful claims might “follow” him.

Through his lawyers, MacIsaac told The Guardian that he felt compelled “to speak out to the media to clear my name and bring attention to the issue.” He added, “I believe this is a serious issue that needs to be resolved in the courts. I do not want to do or say anything that may hinder the lawsuit’s progress, or distract attention from this issue.”

While Google representatives have not specifically commented on the lawsuit, the company did release a statement in December noting that “AI Overviews frequently improve to show the most helpful information” and that they “invest significantly in the quality of responses.” The statement added, “When issues arise – like if our features misinterpret web content or miss some context – we use those examples to improve our systems and may take action under our policies.”

Ironically, Google’s AI Overview for MacIsaac has now been updated to reference his legal action against the company.

This case raises significant questions about the responsibility of technology companies for AI-generated content and may set important precedents for future litigation as AI becomes increasingly integrated into information systems worldwide.
