In a tense but civil exchange on Monday’s episode of “The View,” actress Cheryl Hines faced pointed questions about her husband Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s controversial political positions and his recent appointment as Health Secretary in the Trump administration.

Hines, best known for her role in HBO’s “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” appeared on the daytime talk show to promote her new memoir “Unscripted,” but the conversation quickly shifted to her 11-year marriage to Kennedy and his contentious policy stances.

The interview began cordially with discussion about Hines’ acting career before co-host Joy Behar guided the conversation toward Kennedy. Hines recalled her initial attraction to Kennedy, describing him as “an environmental attorney” who was “fascinating and interesting, and smart and funny and completely different from anyone I ever met in my life.”

Co-host Sunny Hostin then pressed Hines about Kennedy’s decision to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race and endorse Donald Trump. Hines, who described herself as a registered Independent and former Democrat, admitted she was initially “guarded” about her husband’s decision.

“It was complicated, right? Because that is a big change politically,” Hines explained. She added that Trump and Kennedy “sat down and talked” and discovered “a lot of common goals,” specifically mentioning both men’s desire to lower prescription drug costs in the United States.

The conversation grew noticeably tense when Hostin asked about vaccine access. While Hines insisted both Trump and Kennedy support access to vaccines, Behar challenged this claim, noting that both men have “cast doubt on the efficacy of the vaccine, which makes Americans very nervous.”

Hines then referenced a “60 Minutes” report about the Vaccine Injury Compensation Program, which has paid billions for alleged vaccine injuries. “Yes to vaccines, they are important… Can we do better? Can we make them safer?” Hines asked, suggesting that parents’ concerns about developmental issues following vaccination should be heard. The show editors inserted a note stating that “overwhelming evidence disproves any causal link between vaccines and autism.”

The discussion broadened to include other controversial topics Kennedy has spoken about, including alleged links between Tylenol and autism. This prompted moderator Whoopi Goldberg to question Kennedy’s qualifications directly.

“He’s not a doctor and he’s not a professional, and often times when he’s speaking, he is speaking not with the best information,” Goldberg said. “Does it give you pause?”

Hines defended her husband by noting that “90% of Secretaries of HHS have not been doctors,” mentioning that “one of Obama’s Secretaries of HHS was an economist.” Hostin countered that most HHS Secretaries have had scientific backgrounds, even if not medical degrees.

After a commercial break, Hines emphasized Kennedy’s career pursuing legal action against corporations for environmental and health issues. “He was part of the team that sued Monsanto because of Roundup, a pesticide that was causing cancer… He sued Dupont, he sued Exxon, and he sued these companies for health reasons,” she stated.

Hostin remained unpersuaded, responding, “But the problem, respectfully, is that your husband is the least qualified Department of Health and Human Services head that we’ve had in history.”

The interview took a lighter turn when Behar asked about the infamous “brain worm” controversy surrounding Kennedy. “Does he or does he not have a brain worm?” Behar asked.

“It ate just a little bit of his brain and died,” Hines quipped. “So don’t worry.”

Despite the challenging exchange, the conversation concluded amicably with Hines expressing pride in her husband and Goldberg inviting her back to the show—an offer that prompted a mock sigh of exasperation from Hines.

The interview highlights the ongoing tensions surrounding Kennedy’s appointment and the challenge facing political spouses when defending controversial positions held by their partners.
