Canadian authorities launched a nationwide search Tuesday for two suspects who fired multiple shots at the U.S. consulate in downtown Toronto during an early morning attack that damaged the building’s exterior but caused no injuries.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) has classified the shooting as a national security incident. RCMP Chief Superintendent Chris Leather confirmed that federal officers are collaborating with Toronto police to track down the assailants and determine their motives.
“It is extremely concerning,” Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said in response to the attack. “We will use the full weight of our resources to ensure that the perpetrators feel the full weight of justice.”
According to Toronto Police Deputy Chief Frank Barredo, the incident occurred around 4:30 a.m. when two individuals exited a white Honda CRV SUV and opened fire at the building before fleeing the scene. Police have released images of the vehicle but have not yet shared further details about the suspects.
“There were people inside the building. However, this building is highly secured and highly fortified and there were no injuries,” Barredo said. The gunshots damaged the exterior of the consulate but did not penetrate the interior, highlighting the effectiveness of the building’s security measures.
The attack comes amid heightened tensions related to the Iran war and follows recent gunfire incidents at two Toronto-area synagogues last weekend. In response, Leather announced increased security measures for both U.S. and Israeli consulates in Toronto, as well as embassies in Ottawa.
U.S. Ambassador to Canada Pete Hoekstra addressed the incident on social media, stating, “This morning’s attack on our Consulate General in Toronto is deeply troubling. I am very grateful that no one was hurt. Our work continues, we will not be intimidated.”
Ontario Premier Doug Ford condemned the violence as “an absolutely unacceptable act of violence and intimidation aimed at our American friends and neighbors,” while suggesting a potential connection to the ongoing conflict in Iran.
Toronto has a significant Iranian population, and the war has sparked both protests and demonstrations of support outside the U.S. consulate, which has historically been a common site for public demonstrations. The area around the consulate now has a heightened police presence, according to Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow.
Chow emphasized that the city’s Jewish community must have the “right to practice their faith and culture and to live their day-to-day lives without fear, intimidation or violence.” This statement reflects growing concerns about community safety amid rising tensions related to international conflicts.
Prime Minister Carney revealed that the federal government’s Incident Response Group met over the weekend to assess potential changes to “the threat landscape” in Canada and discuss strategies to enhance domestic security. This proactive approach suggests Canadian authorities were already concerned about possible security threats before the consulate attack occurred.
The timing of the shooting has raised questions about potential motivations, particularly considering the complex geopolitical landscape. Security analysts note that diplomatic facilities worldwide often face increased risks during periods of international conflict.
As the investigation continues, authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities. The RCMP has not yet specified whether they believe the attack was carried out by individuals with connections to terrorist organizations or if it represents a more isolated incident motivated by the current geopolitical climate.
