South Korean President and Israel Exchange Sharp Words Over Rights Abuses

Diplomatic tensions have escalated between South Korea and Israel following a pointed exchange over alleged human rights violations by Israeli forces, marking an unusual public dispute between the two nations.

South Korean President Lee Jae Myung on Thursday accused Israel of failing to “reflect” on allegations of rights abuses, doubling down on earlier comments that had already provoked a strong rebuke from Israeli officials.

The controversy began when President Lee commented on a social media video supposedly showing Israeli soldiers torturing and pushing a “Palestinian kid” off a roof. “I need to look into whether this is true, and if so, what measures have been taken,” Lee wrote Wednesday on X (formerly Twitter).

Israel’s Foreign Ministry quickly condemned Lee’s remarks, stating he had “chose to dig up a story from 2022 and to cite a fake account that falsely presented it as a current event.” The ministry further criticized the source of the video as “notorious for spreading anti-Israeli disinformation and falsehoods about Israel.”

Independent verification by news agencies suggests the footage appears to show a different angle of an incident captured in the West Bank two years ago, when reporters witnessed an Israeli soldier using his foot to push the body of what appeared to be a dead adult man off a roof—not a child as claimed in the social media caption.

When the incident originally occurred in 2022, the White House called the footage “deeply disturbing” and demanded an explanation from Israel amid its intensifying operations in the West Bank, which Israel has occupied since 1967. Israel’s Foreign Ministry maintained that the incident was “investigated and addressed” at that time.

Rather than backing down, President Lee escalated the dispute on Thursday by responding directly to Israel’s criticism. “It’s disappointing that you don’t even once reflect on the criticisms from people around the world who are suffering and struggling due to relentless anti-human rights and anti-international law actions,” he stated, adding: “When I am in pain, others feel that pain just as deeply.”

South Korea’s Foreign Ministry attempted to defuse the growing diplomatic tension by clarifying that Lee’s initial post—which drew parallels between alleged Israeli abuses and historical atrocities against Jews and Koreans—was intended as a call for “universal human rights rather than an opinion on any specific issue.”

The public disagreement represents an unusual departure from South Korea’s typically balanced approach to Middle East conflicts. As a close ally of the United States—Israel’s biggest international backer—South Korea has generally maintained a neutral stance without explicitly supporting any particular side in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

This diplomatic friction comes amid heightened global scrutiny of Israel’s military operations in Gaza following the October 7 Hamas attacks. International organizations and human rights groups have increasingly voiced concerns about civilian casualties and humanitarian conditions in the Palestinian territories.

The exchange also highlights the growing role of social media in shaping diplomatic discourse, where misattributed or decontextualized content can rapidly inflame tensions between nations. In this instance, a video from 2022 reframed with inaccurate descriptions triggered a diplomatic incident between countries that have traditionally maintained cordial relations.

Neither country has announced formal diplomatic measures in response to the dispute, but the public nature of the exchange suggests underlying tensions that may require additional diplomatic efforts to fully resolve.
