The controversial film “Dhurandhar,” starring Ranveer Singh, continues to generate polarized reactions across India, with some critics labeling it as propaganda while audiences flock to theaters in unexpected numbers, particularly in Kashmir.

In a recent appearance at the Express Adda, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah weighed in on what he termed “hypernationalistic” cinema, specifically referencing “The Kashmir Files” and “Dhurandhar.” Though Abdullah admitted he hasn’t watched either film—and has no plans to—he noted a striking contrast in how these films have been received in the Kashmir Valley.

“I must be honest, the first movie (The Kashmir Files) didn’t do very well in the Valley, but the second one (Dhurandhar) seems to be doing roaring business,” Abdullah stated. The observation comes amid ongoing debates about the political implications of such films and their portrayal of sensitive historical events.

Abdullah’s observations were confirmed by Vijay Dhar, owner of the only multiplex in the Valley, who was present in the audience. “He is nodding away saying that his box office is doing great with this second movie,” Abdullah remarked, adding, “Clearly, the audience in Kashmir, even if it is a propaganda movie, is quite happy to be entertained by it.”

Industry reports support these claims, indicating that “Dhurandhar” has attracted full houses not just in Srinagar but also in smaller towns across the Valley, including areas like Pulwama and Shopian, which have historically been hotspots of conflict.

The commercial success of “Dhurandhar” extends well beyond Kashmir. The film has amassed an impressive ₹702 crore worldwide, with ₹460 crore coming from the domestic market alone. These figures position it as the second highest-grossing Hindi film of the year, trailing only behind “Chhaava.”

By comparison, “The Kashmir Files,” which faced widespread criticism upon its 2022 release for its controversial portrayal of the exodus of Kashmiri Pandits, earned ₹252 crore during its 10-week theatrical run. While financially successful, it never gained significant traction in the Kashmir Valley itself, unlike “Dhurandhar.”

The film’s success in Kashmir raises interesting questions about the evolving relationship between entertainment and political messaging in Indian cinema. Films with nationalist themes have become increasingly prominent in Bollywood over the past decade, often generating debate about the line between patriotism and propaganda.

Media analysts suggest that “Dhurandhar” may have succeeded where “The Kashmir Files” faltered by balancing its political undertones with stronger entertainment value, making it more palatable to diverse audiences. The film features an ensemble cast including Akshaye Khanna, R Madhavan, Sara Arjun, Arjun Rampal, and Rakesh Bedi, bringing star power that likely contributes to its broad appeal.

The production team behind “Dhurandhar” appears to be capitalizing on this success, with a sequel already announced and reportedly set to arrive within three months. This quick turnaround suggests confidence in the franchise’s commercial viability and audience reception.

The phenomenon of “Dhurandhar” performing well in a region that has often been skeptical of mainstream Indian cinema’s portrayal of Kashmir indicates a potential shift in viewing patterns or a successful bridge between entertainment and political messaging that resonates with local audiences.

As the film continues its theatrical run, industry observers are watching closely to see whether it marks a lasting change in how politically charged cinema is received in sensitive regions or if it represents a temporary anomaly in viewing patterns across the diverse landscape of Indian cinema.
