Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced Friday that he will meet with U.S. President Donald Trump in Florida this Sunday, marking a significant development in ongoing peace negotiations for the nearly four-year Russia-Ukraine conflict.

Speaking to journalists in Kyiv, Zelenskyy revealed that the upcoming talks will focus on security guarantees for Ukraine, noting that the 20-point plan under discussion is “about 90% ready.” The meeting represents a critical step in the extensive U.S.-led diplomatic efforts to broker peace in the region.

The announcement follows what Zelenskyy described as a “good conversation” on Thursday with U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law, indicating intensified diplomatic activity in recent days.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed that Moscow has already been engaged with U.S. representatives, following a recent meeting between Russian presidential envoy Kirill Dmitriev and U.S. envoys in Florida. “It was agreed upon to continue the dialogue,” Peskov told reporters.

Trump’s diplomatic initiative faces significant challenges, however, as both sides maintain seemingly irreconcilable positions. Earlier this week, Zelenskyy indicated some flexibility by stating his willingness to withdraw Ukrainian troops from the country’s eastern industrial heartland as part of a peace plan, provided Russia also pulls back and the area becomes a demilitarized zone monitored by international forces.

Despite Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova’s acknowledgment of “slow but steady progress” in peace talks, Moscow has shown no willingness to relinquish occupied territories. On the contrary, Russia has consistently demanded that Ukraine surrender the remaining territory it holds in the Donbas region, a condition Kyiv flatly rejects. Russia currently controls most of Luhansk and approximately 70 percent of Donetsk, the two provinces that constitute the Donbas.

Meanwhile, violence continues to devastate civilian areas. In Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia region, a guided aerial bomb struck a residential house, killing one person and wounding three others. Six people were injured in a missile strike on the city of Uman, according to local officials.

Overnight Russian drone attacks on Mykolaiv and its suburbs left portions of the city without power. In Odesa, a strategic Black Sea port, energy and port infrastructure sustained damage from drone strikes.

In a significant military development, Ukraine claimed on Thursday that it had struck the Novoshakhtinsk oil refinery in Russia’s Rostov region using British-supplied Storm Shadow missiles. “Multiple explosions were recorded. The target was hit,” Ukraine’s General Staff reported on Telegram. Rostov regional Governor Yuri Slyusar confirmed the incident, stating that a firefighter was wounded while extinguishing the resulting fire.

Ukraine’s campaign of long-range drone strikes against Russian refineries represents a strategic effort to undermine Moscow’s oil export revenue, a critical funding source for its military operations. Russia has responded with its own strategic targeting of Ukrainian energy infrastructure, aiming to cripple the country’s power grid ahead of winter. Ukrainian officials have condemned this tactic as an attempt to “weaponize winter” by denying civilians access to heat, electricity, and running water during the coldest months.

The upcoming Trump-Zelenskyy meeting comes at a pivotal moment when both sides appear to be seeking diplomatic solutions while simultaneously maintaining military pressure. The international community watches closely, as any breakthrough could potentially alter the trajectory of a conflict that has resulted in hundreds of thousands of casualties and displaced millions since Russia launched its full-scale invasion on February 24, 2022.
