Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem made high-profile visits to both the northern and southern U.S. borders in a single day this week, signaling the Trump administration’s intensified focus on immigration enforcement nationwide. Speaking from Nogales, Arizona, in an exclusive interview, Noem defended the administration’s controversial operations despite growing criticism following recent shootings involving federal agents in Minnesota.

“We won’t be deterred by local elected officials that just want to create conflict,” Noem told Fox News Digital. “We’re going to continue to protect the American people and make sure that we have the opportunity to go after those dangerous illegal aliens and remove them.”

Her comments come amid a partial drawdown of federal immigration personnel from Minnesota, where tensions have escalated following two fatal shootings. Border czar Tom Homan announced an immediate reduction of 700 personnel from the state on Wednesday, though 2,000 officers will remain. The move follows the deaths of Alex Pretti, shot by Border Patrol agents during an enforcement operation on January 24, and Renee Good, killed by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent during a confrontation on January 7.

Anti-ICE demonstrations have intensified in Minnesota, with state and local officials, including Governor Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, demanding federal immigration authorities leave the state. President Donald Trump, however, rejected calls to fire Noem during the National Prayer Breakfast in Washington, D.C. on Thursday, citing the “strongest border in the history of our country” in his defense of the secretary.

Noem attributed the resistance in Minnesota to rhetoric from state leadership, contrasting it with more cooperative scenarios elsewhere. “Minneapolis and St. Paul, the Twin Cities, have an opportunity to do the same thing that Memphis did. There we had a Democrat mayor who worked with us… and we dramatically cut crime and murder rates and partnered well together,” she said.

The secretary further alleged that Walz and Frey “have perpetuated and allowed fraud to an unprecedented amount in Minneapolis,” claiming “tens of billions of dollars [were] stolen from the American people.” She suggested the officials were trying to block Homeland Security Investigations from investigating widespread fraud schemes allegedly tied to the Somali community.

During her border visit to Nogales, Noem highlighted what she described as positive outcomes of the administration’s immigration policies. She claimed local residents were “thrilled” with the results, saying they had gotten “their way of life back” after what she characterized as “devastating” policies under the Biden administration.

The secretary also emphasized DHS efforts to combat drug trafficking, calling the previous situation a “crisis.” “Through here was well known as a large drug trafficking area. They have a highway near here that is named ‘Cocaine Highway’ because the cartels moved so much drugs through here that was killing off the next generation of Americans,” she said.

Despite criticism, Noem touted the department’s accomplishments, including significant numbers of deportations – both those carried out by law enforcement and those occurring through “self-deportation.” The administration is incentivizing voluntary departures by offering free flights and $2,600 payments to eligible individuals.

Funding for DHS operations remains contentious in Congress, with debates over the department’s budget potentially triggering another government shutdown. Noem noted that only 11% of the DHS budget is allocated to ICE, with the remainder supporting agencies like the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).

Despite the ongoing political battles, Noem expressed optimism that Congress would recognize the broader scope of DHS funding beyond immigration enforcement and pass the necessary appropriations “quickly.”

The administration’s aggressive immigration enforcement strategy continues to face significant pushback from Democratic officials and immigrant advocacy groups across the country, but the Trump administration appears committed to maintaining its hardline approach regardless of mounting tensions.
