Former CIA Director Calls for Trump’s Removal Following Iran Threats
Former CIA Director John Brennan has called for President Donald Trump to be removed from office, joining more than 70 Democratic lawmakers who claim the president’s recent threats toward Iran on social media were unlawful and demonstrate unfitness for command.
During an interview with Ali Velshi on MSNBC, Brennan asserted that the 25th Amendment, which establishes the protocol for removing a president, “was written with Donald Trump in mind.” The former intelligence chief expressed grave concern about Trump’s continued control of U.S. military capabilities.
“Allowing someone like this to continue to be the commander-in-chief and to control the tremendous capabilities of the U.S. military, including our nuclear weapons capability, which he seemed to allude to when he said he’s going to just eliminate an entire civilization,” Brennan said. “Again, we really are in very, very troubling times.”
The controversy stems from a series of escalating posts Trump made on his Truth Social platform regarding Iran and the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. The crisis began when Trump issued his first threat on Easter Sunday, setting a deadline of Tuesday, April 7, at 8 p.m. Hours before this self-imposed deadline, Trump wrote that “a whole civilization will die tonight,” adding, “I don’t want that to happen, but it probably will.”
Just before the deadline expired, Trump announced that the United States and Iran had reached a two-week ceasefire agreement. However, following negotiations in Pakistan over the weekend, the president declared on Sunday that the U.S. Navy would begin blocking all ships entering and exiting the Strait of Hormuz starting Monday.
The Strait of Hormuz represents one of the world’s most critical maritime chokepoints, with approximately 20% of global oil shipments passing through this narrow waterway between Iran and the Arabian Peninsula. Any military action in this region could have profound implications for global energy markets and international commerce.
Brennan has been consistently critical of Trump’s handling of the Iran conflict, appearing regularly on MSNBC to suggest the president is “flailing” and “clueless” about managing the war.
The timing of Brennan’s comments is particularly notable as he himself is currently under investigation by the Department of Justice. The probe, launched in July 2025, stems from allegations that Brennan improperly handled a 2017 Intelligence Community Assessment (ICA) which concluded that Russia had sought to influence the 2016 presidential election in Trump’s favor.
At issue is whether the controversial Steele dossier was used in preparing the assessment. Brennan previously testified before Congress that the document “was not in any way used as a basis for the Intelligence Community assessment that was done.” However, House Republicans have alleged that Brennan lied during his 2023 Judiciary Committee testimony by denying the CIA’s use of the dossier in preparing the assessment.
Brennan’s legal team has stated they have been informed he is a target of the investigation but claim they have not been told of any “legally justifiable basis for undertaking this investigation,” according to the Associated Press.
House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) recently told Fox News that the DOJ probe is “heating up” and predicted that Brennan would soon face “accountability” for his actions.
The escalating tensions between Trump and Iran, coupled with the president’s inflammatory rhetoric on social media, have reignited debates about presidential fitness and the potential application of the 25th Amendment—a constitutional provision that has never been fully invoked to remove a sitting president.
The White House has not yet responded to requests for comment on Brennan’s statements or the growing calls from Democratic lawmakers for the president’s removal.

This is a complex and sensitive issue. I don’t have a strong opinion on whether Trump should be removed, but I hope any decisions are made carefully and with full consideration of the implications. It’s important to uphold democratic norms even in challenging times.
Removing a sitting president is a serious matter and should only be done with clear justification. While I understand the concerns about Trump’s rhetoric, the 25th Amendment is not to be used lightly. We need to rely on the democratic process and let the voters decide.
While I understand the gravity of the situation, I’m not sure the 25th Amendment is the right tool here. Removing a president is an extreme step that could have far-reaching consequences. I think we need to explore all options and ensure any actions are justified and constitutional.
