The BJP on Saturday launched a strong rebuttal against Congress allegations that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s name had appeared in documents related to Jeffrey Epstein, calling the opposition’s claims a deliberate misrepresentation of information.
The controversy erupted when Congress shared a purported email fragment on social media platform X, claiming Modi’s name had surfaced in the Epstein files released by U.S. authorities. The opposition party demanded clarification from the prime minister and described the alleged connection as “extremely shameful.”
BJP IT department head Amit Malviya swiftly countered the allegations, labeling them “fake news” and a “gross distortion of facts.” According to Malviya, the claim that Epstein wrote about Modi taking his advice to “dance and sing” in Israel for a U.S. president’s benefit has no factual basis in any of the documents released by the U.S. House Oversight Committee.
“Verified records contain no reference to Epstein’s ‘advice,’ no mention of dancing or singing, and no statement claiming ‘IT WORKED!'” Malviya stated on X. He emphasized that independent fact-checks confirm “zero evidence” of any interaction between Modi and Epstein, either direct or indirect.
The BJP leader contextualized Modi’s 2017 visit to Israel as a significant diplomatic engagement focused on defense, technology, and trade relationships, featuring standard cultural courtesies typical of high-level state visits. He characterized the Congress allegations as an attempt to transform a “generic email fragment” into a political attack.
Malviya also pointed out that Epstein was known to exaggerate connections to project influence, suggesting that any mention should be viewed with skepticism. “Congress’s post twists a generic email fragment into a political smear, conveniently ignoring the well-established fact that Epstein was a habitual name-dropper,” he said.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) also issued a strong statement rejecting the alleged reference to the prime minister in the Epstein files. The ministry described it as “little more than trashy ruminations by a convicted criminal” that deserved dismissal with the “utmost contempt.”
Congress leaders, however, continued to press the issue. Pawan Khera, a senior Congress spokesperson, claimed in a social media post that it was a “matter of national shame” that Epstein had written about Modi taking his advice. Meanwhile, Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh called the situation “more scandalous” and criticized the prime minister’s silence on the matter.
The controversy comes amid heightened political tensions in India, with opposition parties increasingly challenging the BJP government on various fronts. The Epstein files have generated significant global interest since their release, with numerous public figures facing scrutiny over potential connections to the convicted sex offender who died in prison in 2019.
Epstein, a wealthy financier with connections to powerful political and business figures worldwide, was awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking charges at the time of his death. Since then, various document releases have revealed the extent of his network and interactions with prominent individuals.
The BJP’s forceful response reflects the sensitivity of any potential association with Epstein, particularly involving a head of government. Malviya concluded his defense by urging the public to “demand evidence, not propaganda,” asserting that “the documents simply do not support these wild allegations or this fake narrative.”
As this political back-and-forth unfolds, the situation underscores the contentious nature of India’s political discourse ahead of various upcoming state elections, where both parties are keen to establish narrative dominance.
