In a strategic social media campaign that ultimately fell short of its goals, far-right personality Nick Fuentes and his followers attempted to influence former President Donald Trump’s political messaging, according to analysis from the Institute for Strategic Dialogue (ISD).

Senior Research Analyst Jared Holt, who tracked the campaign’s development and impact, found that while Fuentes’ self-described “Groyper War” failed to significantly sway the Trump campaign, it demonstrated tactics that could potentially serve as a template for more sophisticated manipulation efforts in the future.

Fuentes, known for his extremist views and who previously dined with Trump at Mar-a-Lago in 2022, mobilized his followers—known as “Groypers”—to carry out coordinated actions across social media platforms. The group successfully managed to trend specific phrases and hashtags on Twitter (now X) through concerted posting efforts. They also followed Fuentes’ instructions to create accounts on Trump’s platform, TruthSocial, in an apparent attempt to establish a visible presence there.

“What we observed was essentially a playbook for manipulating social discourse,” Holt explained in his analysis published in Mother Jones. “The Groypers demonstrated an ability to organize quickly and execute specific platform-based strategies, even if their ultimate goal of influencing Trump’s messaging wasn’t achieved.”

The campaign’s failure to impact Trump’s political positions highlights the limitations of such fringe efforts. However, Holt warns that the tactics employed raise concerns about potential future manipulation attempts, particularly from actors with greater resources, sophistication, or mainstream appeal.

Of particular concern to researchers is the apparent lack of enforcement against such coordinated campaigns on major platforms. According to Holt, the activities undertaken by Fuentes and his followers likely violated platform manipulation policies on both Twitter and TruthSocial, yet faced minimal resistance from content moderators.

“The relative ease with which this campaign operated raises questions about platform readiness to identify and counter more sophisticated influence operations,” Holt noted. “If a relatively small group with limited resources can successfully coordinate to manipulate trending topics, more resourced actors could potentially achieve greater impact.”

The analysis comes at a time when concerns about online manipulation of political discourse have intensified, particularly as the United States approaches another presidential election cycle. Social media platforms have struggled to balance free expression with the need to prevent coordinated inauthentic behavior that can distort public conversation.

Fuentes, who has been banned from numerous mainstream platforms for his extremist content, has nonetheless maintained the ability to organize supporters through alternative channels. His “Groyper” movement, characterized by its use of specific memes and talking points, has previously targeted conservative events and figures in attempts to push them toward more extreme positions.

While the specific goals of Fuentes’ campaign to influence Trump weren’t fully realized, the case study provides valuable insights into how fringe movements attempt to leverage social media algorithms and coordinated action to amplify their messages and create the appearance of broader support.

Social media researchers and platform security teams continue to monitor such activities, particularly as election seasons approach in multiple countries. The challenges of distinguishing between organic political movements and coordinated manipulation campaigns remain significant, with platforms continuously updating their policies and detection methods.

Holt’s comprehensive investigation, published in Mother Jones, serves as a reminder that the digital information landscape remains vulnerable to manipulation, even when such efforts ultimately fail to achieve their intended political outcomes.
