Ukrainian President Debunks Putin’s False Claims with Front-Line Visit to Kupyansk

In a bold move demonstrating both strategic messaging and battlefield reality, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has personally visited the contested city of Kupyansk, directly challenging Russian President Vladimir Putin’s repeated claims that Russian forces had captured the strategically important eastern Ukrainian city.

“Putin publicly lied, claiming that Russian forces had already taken the city. So I went to Kupyansk myself to show the world that Putin is lying,” Zelenskyy said in a selfie video recorded on the outskirts of the city. “We must keep exposing every single Russian falsehood because truth restores justice.”

The Ukrainian leader’s visit comes amid what appears to be a successful counteroffensive by Ukrainian forces in the Kupyansk area, resulting in territorial gains that directly contradict the Kremlin’s narrative of inevitable Russian victory.

Kupyansk, located near the Russian border in northeastern Ukraine’s Kharkiv region, holds significant strategic value. The city was initially occupied by Russian forces in early 2022 before being liberated during Ukraine’s September 2022 counteroffensive. In recent months, it has once again become a focal point of Russian military operations.

Putin’s claims about Kupyansk’s capture began in late October when he invited international journalists to witness what he described as the encirclement of Ukrainian units trapped in the city. Days later, he told Russia’s National Security Council that Kupyansk was “practically in the hands of Russian forces” with only mopping-up operations remaining.

The Kremlin’s disinformation campaign escalated on November 20, when Russia’s top general Valery Gerasimov informed Putin that Russian forces had established “full control” over Kupyansk. Putin then used this alleged victory to intimidate Ukraine, warning that if Kyiv refused to discuss peace proposals, “events that took place in Kupyansk will inevitably be repeated in other key areas of the front.”

As recently as December 2, Putin claimed Kupyansk had been under Russian occupation “for several weeks now,” accusing Ukrainian authorities of being “completely detached from reality.” Zelenskyy’s front-line appearance effectively turned this accusation back on the Russian leader.

“The Russians have had a lot to say about Kupyansk,” Zelenskyy remarked in his video. “The reality speaks for itself.”

Zelenskyy’s visit represents more than just a high-stakes photo opportunity. It’s part of a broader strategy to shape international perceptions of the war at a critical juncture when Ukraine faces increasing pressure to make concessions. With U.S. President-elect Donald Trump preparing to take office and reportedly considering pushing Ukraine toward a settlement, demonstrating battlefield strength has taken on new urgency.

“Today, achieving results on the front line is crucial so that Ukraine can achieve results in diplomacy,” Zelenskyy noted. “This is exactly how it works: All our strong positions within the country translate into strong positions in the negotiations to end the war.”

Military analysts point out that while Ukraine’s recent gains in Kupyansk don’t fundamentally alter the overall situation along the vast front line, they do challenge the narrative that the Ukrainian army is on the verge of collapse. Despite holding the initiative and making some advances, Russian forces continue to progress at what experts describe as a “glacial pace” while sustaining significant casualties.

These battlefield realities could prove crucial as the international community, particularly the incoming Trump administration, assesses its approach to the conflict. Trump has reportedly expressed skepticism about continued support for Ukraine, suggesting the country should accept a Kremlin-friendly peace to avoid destruction. Zelenskyy’s demonstration that Ukraine can still achieve tactical successes directly challenges this defeatist assessment.

Peter Dickinson, editor of the Atlantic Council’s UkraineAlert service, argues that Putin’s need to exaggerate and fabricate Russian military gains reveals the underwhelming results of his invasion. “With enough international support, there is good reason to conclude that the Ukrainian army could replicate its recent Kupyansk success elsewhere and eventually stem the tide of Russia’s invasion,” Dickinson notes.

As 2026 approaches, the military outlook remains nuanced. Ukraine’s ability to continue challenging Russian forces on the battlefield may ultimately represent the most realistic path to meaningful negotiations – not by accepting defeat, but by demonstrating to Moscow that military victory remains elusive.
