Former Andhra Minister Accuses Chandrababu Naidu of Misleading Public on Investments

A political controversy is brewing in Andhra Pradesh as YSRCP leaders question Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu’s absence from public view while alleging misrepresentation of investment figures by the current administration.

Speaking to reporters in Nellore on Saturday, former minister Kakani Govardhan Reddy criticized Naidu and his son for what he described as a “disappearing act,” stating that the public deserves transparency regarding their whereabouts. The statement comes amid growing questions about the Chief Minister’s temporary absence from regular public appearances.

“The people of Andhra Pradesh have a right to know why such secrecy is being maintained about the Chief Minister’s location,” Reddy said, contrasting this with what he characterized as unfair scrutiny faced by former Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy during a personal trip to London to visit his daughter.

At the center of Reddy’s criticism was the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) government’s investment claims, which he dismissed as “fudged and deceptive data.” He alleged that social media campaigns touting economic development lack authenticity and serve primarily to distract from questions about the leadership’s absence.

Investment figures have become a contentious political battleground in Andhra Pradesh, with both major parties presenting dramatically different narratives about their economic achievements. According to Reddy, during Naidu’s previous term from 2014 to 2019, his administration claimed to have signed memorandums of understanding (MoUs) with 1,761 companies for investments worth approximately Rs 18.77 lakh crore. However, Reddy contended that only about 10 percent of these investments actually materialized.

In contrast, he defended the previous YSRCP government’s record, stating that under Jagan Mohan Reddy’s leadership, 394 MoUs worth Rs 13.15 lakh crore were signed, with nearly 20 percent realized within the first year alone. Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, Reddy claimed the YSRCP government achieved an implementation rate of 91.6 percent on promised investments.

The investment debate highlights the ongoing economic challenges facing Andhra Pradesh, which has been working to rebuild its industrial base following the 2014 bifurcation that created Telangana. The state has been aggressively pursuing domestic and international investments across sectors including manufacturing, technology, and renewable energy.

Reddy also addressed the contentious issue of land acquisition in Amaravati, the planned capital city project initiated during Naidu’s previous term. He accused the Chief Minister of “cheating” farmers by implementing policies that benefited associates while paying insufficient compensation to landowners or entangling them in protracted legal disputes.

“It was only YS Jagan Mohan Reddy who did justice to farmers,” the former minister claimed, referring to the previous government’s policies.

The allegations come at a time when Andhra Pradesh’s capital development remains a politically charged issue. The YSRCP government had previously proposed a three-capital model to replace the centralized Amaravati project, but Naidu’s return to power in 2023 has revived focus on the original capital plan.

Political analysts note that investment figures and development metrics often become highly contested in Indian state politics, with ruling and opposition parties frequently offering contradictory statistics and interpretations of economic progress. As the TDP government completes its first year back in power, scrutiny of its economic promises and transparency is likely to intensify.

Neither the Chief Minister’s office nor TDP spokespersons had responded to these allegations at the time of reporting.
