A woman who gained national attention by claiming she was abused by politicians as a child has been charged with perverting the course of justice, following a decade-long investigation that has raised questions about high-profile abuse allegations.

Esther Baker, 43, from West Derby in Liverpool, faces four counts of perverting the course of justice related to her claims of organized child sexual abuse. She is scheduled to appear at Liverpool & Knowsley Magistrates’ Court on January 14, according to the Crown Prosecution Service.

Baker made headlines in 2015 when she waived her anonymity in a Sky TV interview, alleging that former Liberal Democrat MP John Hemming and another unnamed politician, described as “one of the most revered figures in post-war politics,” had repeatedly raped her in a Staffordshire forest when she was between six and eleven years old.

Her allegations emerged during a period of heightened public concern about child sexual abuse, following the launch of Scotland Yard’s Operation Midland, which investigated claims of a VIP pedophile ring. That investigation was later discredited and described as “disastrous” by critics.

Baker’s claims were particularly explosive, as she alleged uniformed police officers had stood guard while lords, politicians, and a judge assaulted her and other children in Cannock Chase. She also claimed additional incidents took place at Dolphin Square in London, a Westminster apartment complex that featured in multiple historical abuse allegations.

The case gained significant political traction, with Baker receiving support from several Labour MPs, including Jess Phillips, who is now a minister for violence against women and girls. Baker’s allegations were raised in Parliament, and she was granted special status at the national independent child sex abuse inquiry, giving her claims substantial institutional credibility.

Staffordshire Police investigated her allegations thoroughly, with Hemming questioned under caution in 2015. However, after two years of investigation, police dropped the case due to lack of evidence. Investigators then turned their attention to examining the veracity of Baker’s claims themselves.

Malcolm McHaffie of the CPS special crime division emphasized the serious nature of the decision to prosecute someone who has made sexual abuse allegations. “Any decision to prosecute someone who has made sexual abuse allegations is not taken lightly and is only pursued where we believe that there is sufficient evidence to prove that the allegations are false, that they were maliciously made, and that it is in the public interest to prosecute,” McHaffie stated.

The CPS confirmed they worked closely with Staffordshire Police throughout their investigation before bringing charges. The four counts of perverting the course of justice represent a dramatic reversal in a case that once captured national attention.

In the aftermath of the investigation, Hemming, who consistently maintained his innocence, successfully won a libel case against comments made by Baker’s supporters on social media. Despite losing his parliamentary seat in 2015, Hemming has worked to restore his reputation following the allegations.

The case highlights the complex challenges facing the justice system when handling historical abuse claims. Authorities must balance taking allegations seriously while ensuring that false claims do not undermine legitimate cases or harm innocent individuals.

Baker’s charging comes amid ongoing discussions about how to handle historical abuse allegations fairly and effectively. Her case had initially emerged during a period when several historical abuse allegations against high-profile figures were being investigated, some of which were later found to be unfounded.

The outcome of Baker’s case will likely influence future approaches to investigating historical abuse claims and may impact public confidence in both the reporting and investigation processes for such sensitive allegations.
