Woman Jailed for False Rape Accusations Against 10 Men

A woman from Bolton has been sentenced to four-and-a-half years in prison after falsely accusing 10 men of rape over a six-year period, in what investigators described as a “continuous, wilful making of false allegations.”

Stacey Sharples, 31, from Farnworth in Bolton, pleaded guilty to 10 counts of perverting the course of justice at Bolton Crown Court on Monday. The false accusations were made between 2013 and 2019, with devastating consequences for the men involved.

According to Greater Manchester Police, most of the falsely accused men were arrested and spent time in custody. Several were subjected to invasive intimate examinations as part of the investigation process. The impact on the men’s lives was severe and far-reaching, with many experiencing relationship breakdowns, job losses, and estrangement from family and friends.

The investigation into Sharples began when police noticed that evidence repeatedly contradicted her accounts. Despite being given multiple opportunities to provide further explanation, the inconsistencies in her stories became impossible to ignore. Investigators determined that Sharples knew “full well the consequences for each of the men involved” when making the allegations.

Nine of the falsely accused men provided victim impact statements to the court, revealing the profound trauma they experienced as a result of the false allegations.

Reece Lockett, one of the men falsely accused, described how the allegations devastated his life. “My life was turned upside down the day I was falsely accused of rape. My mum and dad disowned me. My partner of five years left me. I lost my part-time job,” he said.

Another victim, Astron Inman, spoke about the long-term psychological impact of the false accusations. “Words can’t describe the torment my head has gone through,” he said. Inman revealed that he relocated to Sweden following the allegations and was separated from his children for several years. “My love life had dramatically fallen, I have been single ever since and I find it hard how to approach the opposite sex,” he added.

Detective Sergeant Steven Gilliland, who led the investigation, emphasized that police initially took all of Sharples’ allegations seriously. “We took the allegations made by Stacey Sharples seriously, explored all lines of enquiry and swiftly made arrests or interviewed all the men she accused,” he stated following the sentencing on Wednesday.

Gilliland explained that investigators gave Sharples multiple opportunities to clarify her accounts when evidence contradicted her initial statements, acknowledging that trauma can affect how victims recall experiences. However, as evidence consistently undermined her claims, coupled with the men’s pursuit of justice, police were compelled to investigate Sharples herself.

The detective sergeant praised the resilience of the falsely accused men. “I would like to pay tribute to the strength of these men, who have endured an experience no one would ever wish to go through, and done so with dignity. I hope they feel a sense of justice for what happened to them today,” he said.

Greater Manchester Police stressed that false allegations of sexual violence can undermine genuine victims. The resources and time dedicated to investigating Sharples’ fabricated claims could have been directed toward legitimate reports of sexual offenses.

Despite this troubling case, authorities urged genuine victims not to be deterred from coming forward. Detective Sergeant Gilliland made a personal appeal: “To anyone out there who has been a victim of rape or any sexual offence, I plead that the actions of Miss Sharples do not stop you from seeking support, whether that be from police, a charity or support service.”

The case highlights the delicate balance justice systems face between thoroughly investigating sexual assault claims and protecting individuals from false accusations.
