A 43-year-old Liverpool woman appeared in court yesterday to deny making false allegations of sexual abuse against two former high-profile politicians, in a case that highlights the complex intersection of historical abuse claims and the legal system.

Esther Baker of West Derby, Liverpool, indicated not guilty pleas at Liverpool Magistrates’ Court to four charges of perverting the course of justice. The charges relate to allegations she made against former Liberal Democrat MP John Hemming and the late Lord Roy Jenkins, who served as both a Labour and Social Democratic Party MP before becoming a Liberal Democrat peer.

Baker is specifically accused of falsely identifying Hemming as someone who had committed sexual offenses against her. Similar allegations were made against Jenkins, a prominent political figure who died in 2003 after a distinguished career that included serving as Home Secretary and Chancellor of the Exchequer.

The court proceedings also revealed a third accusation against Baker, claiming she falsely identified the late Simon Cole, former chief constable of Leicestershire Police who died in 2022, as someone who had aided or abetted sexual offenses against her.

A fourth charge alleges that Baker falsely claimed to have been the victim of sexual offenses committed by groups of males at various locations including Cannock Chase in Staffordshire, as well as at private residences and other unspecified locations.

According to court documents, the alleged offenses took place between December 31, 2014, and September 19, 2020. This period coincided with heightened public attention to historical sexual abuse allegations following several high-profile investigations into public figures.

During the hearing, Baker’s solicitor, David Woods, made it clear that his client stands by her allegations, telling the court: “She maintains the accusations in the case are truthful.” This statement underscores the complexity of cases involving historical sexual abuse claims, which often involve limited physical evidence and rely heavily on testimonial accounts.

District Judge Timothy Boswell granted Baker unconditional bail. She is scheduled to next appear at Liverpool Crown Court on February 11 for further proceedings.

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has stated that the charges against Baker were brought following an extensive investigation into claims made during a probe into alleged organised sexual abuse by public figures. This investigation was part of a broader examination of historical sexual abuse allegations that emerged in the wake of the Jimmy Savile scandal, which prompted numerous victims to come forward with claims against prominent individuals.

Cases of this nature present significant challenges for the criminal justice system, which must balance the need to take sexual abuse allegations seriously with ensuring that false accusations do not lead to miscarriages of justice. The burden of proof in such cases is substantial, especially when allegations concern events from many years ago.

This case follows several controversial investigations into historical sexual abuse allegations against public figures in recent years, some of which have resulted in convictions while others have collapsed or led to criticism of police handling.

The allegations against Hemming, who served as MP for Birmingham Yardley from 2005 to 2015, and Jenkins, who was one of the most influential politicians of his generation, have attracted significant attention due to their high public profiles.

As the case proceeds to Crown Court, it is likely to continue generating considerable public interest, particularly among advocates for both sexual abuse survivors and those concerned about false allegations in the criminal justice system.
