In the early hours of Monday morning, Cheshire Police arrested a 22-year-old Warrington woman on suspicion of wasting police time after what authorities described as “false kidnap claims” triggered a significant police response from two forces.

The incident began at 12:47 AM when officers responded to an emergency call in which the caller claimed her partner had been kidnapped by unknown individuals. This report prompted Cheshire Police to launch a large-scale operation to locate the allegedly abducted individual.

After deploying significant resources and successfully locating the reported kidnapping victim, investigators determined that no abduction had occurred and that the initial emergency call was a hoax.

Police investigations revealed that the same woman had also contacted a relative living in the Bury area, claiming she herself was under threat of being kidnapped. This prompted the concerned relative to alert Greater Manchester Police (GMP), which then allocated resources to ensure the woman’s safety—resources that were ultimately determined to have been unnecessarily deployed.

Following these discoveries, officers arrested the woman at approximately 2:50 AM on Museum Street in Warrington town centre. She faces charges of wasting police time and engaging in controlling or coercive behavior. As of the latest update, she remains in police custody and is cooperating with ongoing inquiries.

Chief Inspector Rob McLoughlin of Cheshire Police expressed concern about the incident’s impact on police operations across both jurisdictions.

“Resources from both Cheshire Police and Greater Manchester Police were diverted in response to extremely serious claims that individuals were in immediate danger, when, in fact, there were no credible threats,” McLoughlin stated.

The false reports had tangible consequences for public safety, according to authorities. McLoughlin emphasized that “the diversion of these policing resources meant that real and unfolding incidents could not be responded to as effectively, while officers’ time was wasted searching for someone who was not in danger.”

Law enforcement agencies across the UK have increasingly raised concerns about the strain placed on their resources by false reports. According to recent data from the National Police Chiefs’ Council, police forces across England and Wales respond to thousands of false emergency calls annually, with each incident typically requiring multiple officers and sometimes specialized units depending on the nature of the reported threat.

Such incidents are particularly problematic amid ongoing resource challenges faced by UK police forces. The Police Federation of England and Wales has previously highlighted that false reports exacerbate existing pressures on frontline policing, where staffing levels remain below recommended numbers in many areas.

The charge of “wasting police time” carries potential penalties of up to six months imprisonment and/or fines, reflecting the seriousness with which the justice system views such offenses. The additional charge of controlling or coercive behavior, introduced into UK law in 2015, addresses patterns of behavior that can include manipulation and false claims designed to control others.

The case highlights the complex balance police must strike between responding rapidly to potential life-threatening situations and managing finite resources. Authorities note that while all emergency reports must be treated seriously, false claims can have cascading effects on public safety by diverting attention from genuine emergencies.

Cheshire Police indicated that the investigation remains ongoing, with further details to be released as the case progresses through the justice system.
