Wisconsin authorities have arrested a 24-year-old woman accused of a hit-and-run crash that left a Lyft driver comatose, then attempting to cover up her involvement by filing a false police report claiming her own vehicle had been damaged in a separate incident.

Jenni Fischer was taken into custody on December 10 and faces serious charges including hit-and-run involving great bodily harm and making a fraudulent insurance claim, according to local television station WITI.

Court documents reveal that Milwaukee Police responded to the crash scene shortly after 8:30 p.m. on December 1. They found a 26-year-old male Lyft driver unconscious but breathing, suffering from severe head trauma. The victim was rushed to a hospital where he underwent two surgical procedures. By December 10, medical records indicated he remained in a coma with his condition deteriorating.

Investigators noted the driver’s white Nissan Sentra had extensive damage, with the side door “mangled and crushed backwards,” consistent with being sideswiped by another vehicle. Police recovered evidence from the suspect’s vehicle at the scene and obtained surveillance footage showing what appeared to be a white or gray SUV, operating with only its running lights on, striking the Lyft driver’s car.

After identifying the suspect vehicle as likely a Jeep Compass, detectives began searching insurance claims for vehicles matching that description. Their investigation led them to a claim filed on December 3 – just two days after the actual crash – for a Jeep Compass with a vehicle identification number registered to Fischer.

The insurance claim had required Fischer to file a police report, which she submitted through the Citizen Online Reporting portal on December 2. This reporting system is typically reserved for minor incidents, according to Law&Crime. In her report, Fischer falsely claimed she had discovered damage to her SUV in the parking lot after leaving work on December 1.

The police report provided investigators with Fischer’s home address, which enabled them to obtain additional surveillance footage. This video showed her Jeep, with running lights on, pulling into her building’s parking structure shortly after the hit-and-run occurred. The footage captured a woman in a green coat, later identified as Fischer by her parents, struggling to walk up stairs, bouncing between walls, and dropping her keys before taking an elevator in the lobby – behavior suggesting possible impairment.

Footage from the following morning showed Fischer returning to her vehicle without any apparent difficulties.

On December 6, police interviewed Fischer’s mother, who initially repeated the fabricated hit-and-run story. However, she later led investigators to a barn where her daughter’s damaged SUV was stored. Police observed damage consistent with the crash scene, including white paint transfer from the Lyft driver’s vehicle.

After being shown video evidence of the actual crash, Fischer’s mother acknowledged the insurance claim was fraudulent and requested it be canceled.

Authorities arrested Fischer at her parents’ home the following day. She made her initial court appearance on December 11, where a judge set a $20,000 cash bond. Her next court hearing is scheduled for Wednesday.

The case highlights the serious consequences of hit-and-run accidents, which remain a persistent problem nationwide. According to traffic safety data, hit-and-run crashes involving serious injuries often result in enhanced criminal penalties, particularly when followed by attempts to obstruct justice through false reporting.
