Iran Warns Strait of Hormuz Access Could Be Restricted Despite Temporary Reopening

Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf has sharply criticized U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent statements and warned that the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz may not remain open if Washington continues its naval blockade in the region.

In a pointed message shared on the social media platform X, Ghalibaf claimed that Trump made “seven false claims in one hour” during a recent address. The Iranian official did not specify which statements he was referring to, but his rebuke comes amid heightened tensions between Tehran and Washington.

“They did not win the war with these lies, and they will certainly not get anywhere in negotiations either,” Ghalibaf stated, suggesting that American diplomatic efforts would be unsuccessful if based on what he characterized as falsehoods.

The Iranian Parliament Speaker issued a stark warning regarding the Strait of Hormuz, through which approximately 20% of global oil shipments pass daily. “If Washington continues its blockade, the Strait of Hormuz may not remain open,” he cautioned, adding that passage through the waterway would be regulated via designated routes and subject to Iranian authorization.

Emphasizing Iran’s control over the strategic waterway, Ghalibaf noted: “Whether the strait is open or closed, and the rules governing it, will be determined in the field, not on social media.” He dismissed media narratives as having no influence on the Iranian public and urged audiences to rely on official sources, particularly statements from Iran’s Foreign Ministry, for accurate information on ongoing negotiations.

The statements come as Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araghchi announced on Friday that the Strait of Hormuz would be temporarily reopened for commercial shipping. “In line with the ceasefire in Lebanon, passage for all commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz is declared fully open for the duration of the ceasefire, along coordinated routes already announced by the Ports and Maritime Organisation of the Islamic Republic of Iran,” Araghchi wrote on X.

This temporary reopening provides momentary relief for global energy markets, which have been on edge due to the possibility of disruptions to oil shipments through this critical chokepoint. Energy analysts have consistently warned that any prolonged closure of the strait could send global oil prices soaring and potentially trigger an international economic crisis.

In response to Iran’s announcement, former President Trump claimed on his Truth Social platform that Iran had agreed never to close the strait again, characterizing it as a move preventing Iran from using the waterway as a “weapon against the world.” However, he added that the U.S. naval blockade would remain in place until a broader “transaction” with Iran is completed.

The contradictory statements from Iranian officials and Trump highlight the precarious nature of the current arrangement and suggest that access to the strait remains a key bargaining chip in ongoing geopolitical tensions.

Maritime security experts note that even temporary disruptions to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz can have significant implications for global energy prices. The waterway, which is just 21 miles wide at its narrowest point, connects the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea, making it a critical artery for the global economy.

The current situation underscores the complex interplay between regional security dynamics, global energy markets, and international diplomacy. As tensions continue to simmer between Iran and the United States, the status of the Strait of Hormuz remains a focal point of concern for shipping companies, energy traders, and governments worldwide.
