A video circulating on social media falsely claims to show chaotic scenes of people desperately trying to flee Israel through Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion Airport. The footage, which has garnered thousands of interactions on Facebook, allegedly depicts crowds shouting, “We want tickets, we want flights, we want to leave Israel.”

In the video, individuals can be seen throwing objects at staff positioned behind counters, who respond by throwing items back. The footage also shows people chanting and attempting to climb over the counters, creating an impression of panic and disorder.

However, fact-checking reveals the video has been completely misrepresented. The incident was not filmed at Ben Gurion Airport and has no connection to people attempting to leave Israel amid the ongoing regional conflict.

The footage actually documents an altercation that occurred at a Cinema City complex in Jerusalem in July 2023. A local reporter shared a longer, higher-quality version of the same video on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) on July 20, with a Hebrew caption explaining that it showed “rowdy youths throwing objects at workers on site, gathering and chanting ‘Death to Arabs.'”

Local Israeli media outlets reported on the cinema incident, noting that police were called to the scene, though no immediate arrests were made at the time. The disturbance appears to have been an isolated incident related to local tensions rather than any mass exodus attempt from the country.

While the cinema footage is being misrepresented, there were separate, legitimate reports of disruptions at Ben Gurion Airport earlier in March 2023. Those incidents stemmed from last-minute changes to passenger capacity on certain flights, leaving some travelers frustrated. Video footage of those events showed some confrontations between passengers and airline staff, but these were unrelated to the cinema incident now being circulated with false claims.

The misrepresentation of the cinema footage is part of a troubling pattern seen throughout the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, where social media has become flooded with misleading content. Old videos, often from entirely different locations or conflicts, are frequently shared with false claims that they depict current events in the region.

This pattern of misinformation complicates the public’s ability to understand the actual situation on the ground in Israel and Gaza. As tensions remain high in the region following the October 7 attacks by Hamas and Israel’s subsequent military response in Gaza, accurate information becomes increasingly vital for the public’s understanding of events.

Social media platforms have struggled to contain the spread of such misleading content despite implementing various fact-checking measures. The rapid sharing capabilities of platforms like Facebook, X, and TikTok often allow false narratives to reach millions before corrections can be widely distributed.

Media literacy experts emphasize the importance of verifying information before sharing content on social media. Critical questions about a video’s source, date, and context can help users avoid inadvertently spreading misinformation during sensitive geopolitical situations.

When encountering dramatic footage from conflict zones, experts recommend checking whether established news organizations have verified the content, looking for the original source of the video, and being particularly cautious about emotionally charged content that seems designed to provoke strong reactions.
