Former Davao de Oro governor Arturo Uy has publicly defended businessman Sammy Uy against allegations of involvement in illegal drug activities, describing the claims as unverified and damaging to the businessman’s reputation.

In a statement that quickly gained traction across social media platforms, Arturo Uy categorically rejected the accusations. “SAMMY UY is not a drug lord,” he declared, describing the businessman as a legitimate and respected figure in Davao City’s business community.

The former governor emphasized that his defense stems from decades of personal connection with Sammy Uy. “I knew him personally. We grew up together. I knew his family, I knew his dealings,” he stated, suggesting that his assessment is grounded in firsthand knowledge rather than speculation.

This public defense comes amid growing controversy surrounding allegations that have emerged in political discussions. Notably, no court has substantiated these claims, and no formal convictions have been issued against Sammy Uy—a fact that supporters consistently highlight in their rebuttals.

Adding weight to Arturo Uy’s defense, the KH (Uy) Family Association-Davao Chapter recently released a formal document titled “Rebuttal to Unfounded Accusation.” The statement, which carried multiple signatures, strongly denied any involvement of Sammy Uy in illegal drug trade or related financial activities, describing the allegations as “false, reckless, and unsupported by credible evidence.”

The association presented several points to counter the accusations, including Sammy Uy’s reputation as a law-abiding businessman with transparent dealings, his standing within the community, and the absence of any criminal record. The group also noted that maintaining professional and personal relationships with various sectors, including public officials, should not be interpreted as evidence of wrongdoing.

The statement expressed concern about the “politically charged environment” where serious accusations appear to be driven more by political narrative-building than factual evidence. The organization warned that publicly labeling an individual as a “drug lord” without due process causes significant harm.

“It is deeply concerning that serious allegations of criminal activity are being used in public discourse in a manner that suggests political motivation rather than a genuine pursuit of truth or justice,” read part of the association’s statement.

The allegations against Sammy Uy gained prominence in April when former senator Antonio Trillanes IV told the House Committee on Justice during impeachment hearings that Vice President Sara Duterte and members of her family allegedly received millions of pesos from Uy, whom Trillanes described as a drug lord.

Sammy Uy is no stranger to political circles in the Philippines. Records show he was one of the major financial contributors to former president Rodrigo Duterte’s successful 2016 presidential campaign. According to Duterte’s Statement of Contributions and Expenditures (SOCE), Uy’s companies—Davao Farms and Davao Import Distributors Inc.—each contributed P30 million, making him part of a group of four Davao businessmen who collectively donated P165 million to the campaign.

Beyond politics, Uy has been described by former president Duterte as a member of a prominent Filipino-Chinese business family in Davao City with diverse commercial interests. His business portfolio reportedly spans multiple industries including appliance distribution, furniture, office equipment, motorcycles, and construction materials. He also has interests in real estate leasing and poultry operations.

Additional business ventures attributed to Uy include investments in hospitality businesses such as motels and hotels, gasoline stations, real estate enterprises, and majority ownership in a private hospital in Davao City.

As the controversy continues to unfold, supporters of Sammy Uy are calling for restraint, accountability, and adherence to proper legal procedures, urging authorities to ensure that allegations are thoroughly investigated and not exploited for political purposes.
