Climate scientists have consistently documented the increasing intensity of extreme weather events as global temperatures rise, yet efforts to deny this reality persist at the highest levels of government. A recent video by nonprofit media company Crooked Ideas has spotlighted this issue by challenging false claims made by Chris Wright, the current U.S. Energy Secretary and former CEO of a fracking company.
In the viral TikTok video, Crooked Ideas presents clips of Wright incorrectly characterizing findings from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Wright falsely claimed that the IPCC hasn’t stated that weather patterns are becoming more extreme or that the world faces a climate emergency.
“Like none of that is true, and none of that is claimed in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report,” Wright stated in the clip, as Wall Street Journal opinion columnist Kim Strassel laughed in apparent agreement.
Jon Millstein, senior editor for Crooked Ideas, quickly refuted these claims by displaying a direct quote from the most recent IPCC report that explicitly contradicts Wright’s statements: “It is an established fact that human-induced greenhouse gas emissions have led to an increased frequency and/or intensity of some weather and climate extremes since pre-industrial times, in particular temperature extremes.”
The disconnect between scientific consensus and political messaging highlights growing concerns about the influence of industry ties on climate policy. According to his LinkedIn profile, Wright still identifies himself as founder, CEO, and chairman of Liberty Energy, a company that “provides hydraulic fracturing services and related technologies to onshore oil and natural gas exploration and production companies in North America,” as described by Yahoo! Finance.
“It’s scary to see how hard Trump’s team is working to convince his followers that science isn’t real, climate change is good, and gasoline is God,” Millstein remarked in the video.
The scientific evidence regarding climate change and extreme weather is robust. As global temperatures have continued to rise, scientists have documented increasing severity of weather events including heat waves, hurricanes, floods, and wildfires. These intensifying events have resulted in greater loss of life, property destruction, and rising insurance costs across many regions.
The IPCC, which represents the consensus of thousands of scientists worldwide, has repeatedly demonstrated that rising temperatures are primarily caused by greenhouse gas emissions from human activities, particularly the burning of fossil fuels including oil, coal, and natural gas.
The video by Crooked Ideas appears against a backdrop of broader efforts by the current administration to roll back environmental regulations. As Millstein spoke, the background displayed headlines from major news outlets including the New York Times, NPR, and the BBC documenting these regulatory changes that generally favor fossil fuel industries.
Climate misinformation has become increasingly concerning to scientists and environmental advocates who worry that public understanding of climate science is being undermined by individuals with financial interests in maintaining the status quo of fossil fuel dependency.
The video has resonated with viewers, with one commenter sarcastically noting, “I’m sure the, uh, former fracking CEO has an unbiased view on greenhouse gases and climate change.”
Millstein concluded his message by encouraging viewers to “keep sharing reliable information, so they have to work even harder,” emphasizing the importance of public awareness in countering misinformation about climate science.
As extreme weather events continue to affect communities worldwide, the debate over climate policy remains a critical issue for voters, policymakers, and industries adapting to environmental realities and regulatory changes.

It’s disappointing to see a government official downplaying the IPCC’s well-documented findings on climate change. Dismissing the scientific consensus on extreme weather patterns is concerning. I hope this incident leads to greater scrutiny and accountability for public statements on such critical issues.
This is a troubling example of how misinformation can seep into the highest levels of government. Public trust is eroded when officials make claims that contradict established climate science. I hope this prompts a renewed focus on evidence-based policymaking to address the climate crisis effectively.
The IPCC’s research on climate change and extreme weather is clear, and it’s concerning to see a government official spreading false claims. Robust dialogue is important, but denying scientific consensus is irresponsible. I hope this incident leads to greater transparency and accountability for public figures on these critical issues.
I agree. Fact-based leadership should be the standard, not dismissing established climate science for political expediency. Public trust is essential, and officials must be held accountable for their statements, especially on matters with such far-reaching consequences.
It’s concerning to see government officials making false claims that contradict well-established climate science. Robust debate is healthy, but denying the realities of climate change is irresponsible. I hope this incident leads to greater accountability and fact-checking for public figures.
This is a worrying trend of misinformation from senior government leaders. Public trust is critical, and officials should be held to high standards of accuracy, especially on issues as consequential as climate change. I hope the IPCC’s findings are given the weight they deserve.
Agreed. Fact-based policymaking should be the top priority, not spreading disinformation for political gain. The public deserves leaders who are committed to addressing the climate crisis responsibly.
