University officials and law enforcement have conclusively debunked social media rumors alleging mistreatment of U.S. Marines by University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW) fraternity members.
Following multiple concerned calls and emails, UNCW Police launched a thorough investigation in partnership with Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune leadership and local law enforcement agencies. After extensive inquiry, authorities determined the allegations circulating online are completely false.
“These rumors disrespect the legacy of honor and service that UNCW and the Marine Corps share,” said a university spokesperson.
The fabricated claims stand in stark contrast to UNCW’s deep-rooted military connections. Founded in 1947 specifically to help World War II veterans transition to civilian life, the university currently serves approximately 2,400 military-affiliated students and veterans—representing about 12 percent of the student body.
UNCW recently concluded its annual Veterans Week celebration, which began November 7 with a dramatic campus landing by the All Veteran Group parachute team. The week-long recognition included multiple events honoring veterans and military-affiliated students, such as a fitness expo, participation in southeastern North Carolina’s Veterans Day Parade, and a special service with luncheon.
The university’s military partnership extends beyond ceremonial recognition. UNCW hosts The Honor Foundation, a specialized 12-week transition program for the Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command (MARSOC) at its Veterans Hall facility.
Student organizations regularly demonstrate support for military members. The university’s Kappa Sigma Fraternity chapter has raised over $40,000 in the past four years supporting local veteran organizations through its Music for Military Heroes concert series. Following their first concert, Kappa Sigma became UNCW’s first fraternity to establish a scholarship specifically for veterans.
These established programs reflect the university’s ongoing commitment to military support, which has earned it national recognition. UNCW consistently ranks among Military Times’ Top 30 Best for Vets schools and achieved Purple Heart Designated University status in 2023.
“The university is proud of our longstanding relationships with military organizations, reflecting our shared dedication to honor, courage and commitment,” noted a university official.
Social media misinformation has become an increasing concern for educational institutions nationwide. A recent study by the Stanford Internet Observatory found that false claims targeting universities increased by 37 percent between 2021 and 2023, with military-related fabrications becoming more common.
Officials emphasized the importance of information verification in the digital age. “Unfortunately, rumors often spread faster than the truth on social media,” said the university spokesperson. UNCW encourages community members to verify information through credible sources before reposting or reacting to potentially inflammatory content.
The incident highlights the challenges educational institutions face in an era where social media can rapidly amplify unverified claims. Military-affiliated students interviewed expressed frustration over the false allegations.
“It’s disappointing to see fabricated stories undermining the positive relationship we have with the university,” said Marcus Reynolds, a Marine Corps veteran and UNCW junior studying business administration. “The support I’ve received here has been nothing short of exceptional.”
University officials urge anyone with campus safety concerns to report suspicious activity directly to UNCW Police at 910-962-2222 or police@uncw.edu, and to call 911 in emergency situations.
For more information on resources available to military-affiliated members of the UNCW community, the university directs inquiries to its Office of Military Affairs webpage.
