University officials have quashed rumors circulating on social media about alleged mistreatment of U.S. Marines by university fraternity members, following a comprehensive investigation conducted in collaboration with military base leadership and local law enforcement.
Officials at the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW) have been working closely with Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune in Jacksonville and area police departments to investigate claims that spread across social media platforms in recent days. After receiving multiple concerned calls and emails, university police conducted what they described as an “exhaustive effort” to determine the validity of these allegations.
“Following an exhaustive effort, officials have determined that there is no truth behind the rumors,” according to a statement released by the university. “The allegations being made are solely falsehoods generated on social media.”
The university emphasized that such fabricated claims damage the strong relationship between UNCW and the military community, describing the rumors as disrespectful to “the legacy of honor and service” shared between the institutions.
UNCW has deep military connections dating back to its founding in 1947, when the institution was established specifically to help World War II veterans transition to civilian life. Today, military-affiliated students and veterans make up approximately 12% of the university’s student body, with about 2,400 currently enrolled.
The false rumors emerged during a period when the university was actively celebrating its military community. UNCW recently hosted Veterans Week events, beginning November 7 with a ceremonial landing on campus by the All Veteran Group parachute team. Additional activities included a fitness expo, participation in the southeastern North Carolina Veterans Day Parade, and a special service and luncheon honoring those who served.
The university’s commitment to military personnel extends beyond ceremonial events. UNCW hosts The Honor Foundation, a specialized 12-week transition program for the Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command (MARSOC) at its Veterans Hall facility. This program represents just one facet of the university’s ongoing support for service members transitioning to civilian careers.
Student organizations at UNCW have also demonstrated substantial commitment to military causes. The university’s chapter of Kappa Sigma Fraternity has raised over $40,000 in the past four years through their Music for Military Heroes concert series, supporting local veteran organizations. Following their inaugural concert, Kappa Sigma became the first fraternity at UNCW to establish a scholarship specifically for veterans.
This dedication to military support has earned UNCW recognition as a perennial Top 30 Best for Vets school according to Military Times rankings. In 2023, the university received designation as a Purple Heart University, further cementing its commitment to service members.
University officials urged the public to approach social media content with critical thinking, especially during times when misinformation can spread rapidly. “Unfortunately, rumors often spread faster than the truth on social media,” the statement noted. “Please help UNCW protect our campus and the community from misinformation by being savvy social media consumers.”
The incident highlights a growing challenge for institutions dealing with the rapid spread of misinformation through digital channels. False claims can quickly gain traction online, requiring swift response from officials to prevent reputational damage and community discord.
The university encourages community members to verify information with credible sources before sharing or responding to social media content. They have asked that suspicious or concerning activity be reported directly to UNCW Police at 910.962.2222 or police@uncw.edu, with emergency situations directed to 911.
