Disinformation Campaign Targets India’s Institutions in Global Information War
A sophisticated wave of disinformation targeting India’s institutions, leadership, and international standing swept across digital platforms in March 2026, revealing what security analysts describe as a coordinated attempt to undermine the country’s credibility on the world stage.
The campaign, involving dozens of false claims spread primarily through social media, showed remarkable strategic focus on sensitive domains: national security, defense operations, diplomatic relations, economic stability, and social cohesion.
“What we’re seeing isn’t random noise. These are targeted narratives designed to create specific perceptions about India’s role in regional conflicts and internal governance,” said a senior intelligence official speaking on condition of anonymity.
The geographical spread of disinformation sources—spanning Pakistan, West Asia, Europe, and North America—points to what experts call a transnational dimension of the campaign, suggesting coordination across borders and ideological lines.
Analysis of 40 documented cases revealed several patterns. Most prominent was the exploitation of the Israel-Iran conflict, with numerous fabricated claims attempting to portray India as an active participant in the Middle East tensions. One false claim alleged that “India had launched a missile strike on an Iranian naval vessel,” while another fabricated statement attributed to Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi suggested that India had shared intelligence with Israel regarding Iranian ship movements.
Domestic fault lines were also targeted. Multiple false narratives about unrest in Manipur circulated, including a fabricated claim that “Manipur freedom fighters” had attacked a BJP minister’s convoy and killed 15 Assam Rifles personnel. These attempts to inflame regional tensions coincided with actual periods of sensitivity in the northeastern state.
The technological sophistication of these disinformation efforts marks a significant evolution. AI-generated videos, deepfakes, and digitally manipulated content featured prominently, making detection increasingly difficult for ordinary users. In one instance, a digitally altered video falsely showed Home Minister Amit Shah claiming “Pakistan was supposed to be part of India” during a parliamentary session.
Economic anxiety was another target. Multiple accounts spread false claims that “India had only two days of petrol supply remaining” or that “ammonia and urea plants across India had shut down,” attempting to create panic about potential food and fuel shortages.
Defense analyst Rajesh Kumar noted the pattern of targeting India’s security apparatus: “The repeated attempts to fabricate statements by military leaders or create false incidents involving armed forces seem designed to erode trust in these institutions. This is a classic information warfare tactic.”
The Ministry of External Affairs has dismissed these claims, with spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal confirming that many attributed statements were fabricated. The Indian government has been actively countering these narratives through official channels.
Media literacy experts warn that the speed at which such disinformation spreads often outpaces verification processes. “By the time a claim is debunked, the damage is often already done,” said Dr. Meeta Sharma, a digital media researcher at Delhi University. “The goal isn’t necessarily to make people believe specific claims but to create general uncertainty and distrust.”
Security agencies have identified Pakistan-based accounts as primary originators of many false narratives, with handles like “The Whistle Blower,” “Zard si Gana,” and “Manipur Post” repeatedly sharing fabricated content. However, the amplification network extended far beyond South Asia, with accounts based in Saudi Arabia, Europe, and the United States participating in the spread.
The campaign represents an evolution in information warfare tactics, moving beyond simple fake news to sophisticated narrative construction using advanced technology. As one security analyst put it, “This isn’t just about fact-checking individual claims. It’s about recognizing an ongoing information conflict where narrative control matters as much as ground reality.”
As digital platforms struggle to contain the spread of such content, experts emphasize the need for institutional credibility, rapid response mechanisms, and enhanced public awareness about verification techniques as critical defenses in this evolving landscape of information conflict.
For India, the challenge extends beyond countering individual false claims to protecting its institutional integrity and international standing in an age where digital battlegrounds may prove as consequential as physical ones.
