UFC Champion Topuria Steps Away from Fighting Amid Extortion Claims

UFC lightweight champion Ilia Topuria has announced he is temporarily stepping away from defending his title as he battles what he describes as an extortion plot involving “false allegations of domestic abuse.”

The undefeated 28-year-old Georgian fighter revealed his decision in a statement released on social media Monday, explaining that he needed to address threats to his “personal integrity, family, and reputation.”

“Over the past several weeks, I have made the difficult decision to temporarily step away from defending my title,” Topuria stated. “This was not a decision I took lightly. The fighter stated that he has provided authorities with substantial evidence to counter the allegations, including audio, video, and written material, as well as witness statements. He did not identify the individual allegedly attempting to extort him and requested that people avoid speculation about the situation.

Topuria has emerged as one of the UFC’s most dominant champions since capturing the lightweight title in February 2024. His rise through the ranks has been meteoric, with his aggressive fighting style and charismatic personality making him a fan favorite. Currently ranked No. 2 in the UFC’s pound-for-pound fighter rankings, Topuria has successfully defended his belt with impressive knockout victories over former champions Max Holloway and Charles Oliveira.
