Trump Administration Continues to Challenge 2020 Election Results with FBI Search in Georgia

More than five years after the 2020 presidential election, former President Donald Trump, now back in the White House, continues to pursue claims that the election was stolen from him. Despite numerous court rulings to the contrary, these assertions have now transformed into official U.S. government positions.

In a significant escalation of efforts to rewrite the 2020 election narrative, FBI agents on Wednesday conducted a search of an election center in Fulton County, Georgia, which includes Atlanta. The agents sought ballots and voting records from the contested election, marking a new chapter in Trump’s persistent campaign to challenge his defeat.

The facts regarding the 2020 election, however, remain clear. President Biden won Georgia, Arizona, and other critical swing states, as confirmed by multiple Republican officials, including Georgia’s Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger and Governor Brian Kemp.

“For nearly three years now, anyone with evidence of fraud has failed to come forward — under oath — and prove anything in a court of law,” Governor Kemp stated on social media in 2023. “Our elections in Georgia are secure, accessible, and fair and will continue to be as long as I am governor.”

In Arizona, another battleground state where Trump contested the results, conservative Republican Rusty Bowers, then speaker of the Arizona House, rejected pressure from Trump and his allies. “I do not want to be a winner by cheating,” Bowers wrote in his personal journal, as later revealed in congressional testimony. “I will not play with laws I swore allegiance to.”

Perhaps most notably, Trump’s own Attorney General William Barr publicly acknowledged the lack of evidence for widespread voter fraud. Barr, who resigned in December 2020, testified in 2022 that he had informed the White House their election theories were unfounded.

“They obviously were influencing a lot of people, members of the public, that there was systemic corruption in the system and that their votes didn’t count,” Barr stated. “I told them that it was crazy stuff and they were wasting their time and that it was doing grave, grave disservice to the country.”

Former Vice President Mike Pence, who faced intense pressure from Trump not to certify the election results on January 6, 2021, has since defended his decision to uphold the Constitution. “Despite what the former president and his allies have said for now more than two and a half years and continue to insist,” Pence remarked in 2023, “the Georgia election was not stolen and I had no right to overturn the election on Jan. 6.”

Multiple recounts and audits in contested states confirmed Biden’s victory. In Georgia specifically, where the margin was particularly close, reviews found no impropriety and no significant changes to the final vote tallies. A comprehensive investigation by The New York Times, which contacted election officials in every state shortly after the 2020 election, found no evidence of voter fraud that would have affected the outcome.

The legal record is equally definitive. Trump and his allies filed more than 60 lawsuits challenging the election results across approximately seven states, alleging fraud, malfeasance, and procedural errors. They lost nearly every case, with their claims repeatedly rejected for lack of evidence or credibility, often by judges appointed by Republicans, including Trump himself.

“Free, fair elections are the lifeblood of our democracy,” wrote Judge Stephanos Bibas, a Trump appointee to the federal bench in Pennsylvania. “Charges of unfairness are serious. But calling an election unfair does not make it so. Charges require specific allegations and then proof. We have neither here.”

Specific allegations made by Trump and his allies have been systematically debunked. Claims about suitcases full of Biden-only ballots in Georgia were refuted by Byung J. Pak, Trump’s own appointed U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Georgia, who testified that the supposed suitcase was “actually an official lockbox where ballots were kept safe.”

Rudy Giuliani, Trump’s attorney, eventually admitted in legal filings that he had made false statements about two Georgia election workers he and Trump had accused of concealing ballots. Similarly, allegations that Dominion Voting Systems machines changed votes were never substantiated, with Fox News, Newsmax, and Giuliani all settling defamation lawsuits brought by the company.

The January 6, 2021, Capitol riot led to federal charges against nearly 1,600 people, while other Trump allies faced state charges for participating in fake elector schemes. Now, with Trump back in the White House, the unprecedented situation of a sitting president challenging his previous electoral defeat continues to unfold with potentially far-reaching consequences for American democracy.

I appreciate the desire to ensure the integrity of elections, but the repeated failure to prove any widespread fraud is concerning. We need to be careful not to undermine democracy in the name of protecting it.

  2. Ava Rodriguez on

It’s understandable that people want answers, but at some point we have to accept the reality that the 2020 election, while contentious, was conducted fairly. Continuing to push false claims is counterproductive.

  3. Elijah Jackson on

It’s concerning to see ongoing efforts to relitigate the 2020 election. Voter confidence is crucial, but these unsubstantiated claims risk further political polarization. I hope we can focus on the real issues facing the country.

  4. Patricia Smith on

I’m curious to see what new evidence the FBI search in Georgia might uncover, if any. However, the consistent rulings and confirmations from state officials suggest the 2020 outcome was legitimate.

  5. Robert Hernandez on

As a voter, I want to have confidence in the integrity of our elections. While I understand the desire to investigate concerns, the continued lack of proof is troubling. We need to move forward in a constructive way.

  6. Ava A. Johnson on

The 2020 election has been extensively scrutinized, and the results upheld by officials of both parties. Continuing to push false narratives is irresponsible and only serves to erode public trust.

  7. The search in Georgia is an interesting development, but I’m skeptical it will uncover anything to fundamentally change the established facts about the 2020 election. We should focus on the future, not dwell on the past.

While I respect the right to question election results, the overwhelming evidence shows the 2020 election was free and fair. Continued claims without proof only serve to undermine democratic institutions.
