In a growing controversy surrounding an Immigration and Customs Enforcement operation in Minneapolis, former President Donald Trump has been accused of spreading misinformation about a fatal shooting involving ICE agents.

The incident, which occurred yesterday afternoon, resulted in the death of a 37-year-old woman during an immigration raid in Minneapolis. Video evidence shows the woman was shot while attempting to drive away from ICE officers.

Following the shooting, Trump took to Truth Social with claims that directly contradict available video evidence. In his post, Trump asserted that the driver “violently, wilfully and viciously ran over” an ICE agent who was subsequently injured and “recovering in hospital.” Neither claim appears to be supported by evidence, as footage shows no officers were struck by the vehicle, and there have been no reports of agent injuries.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz quickly responded to Trump’s characterization of events, writing on social media: “I’ve seen the video. Don’t believe this propaganda machine.” In a subsequent press appearance, Walz expressed frustration with federal authorities, stating, “I have a very simple message: We don’t need further help from the federal government. To Donald Trump and Kristi Noem, you’ve done enough.”

Walz described the situation as “total chaos” and criticized the immediate political positioning that followed the incident. “It’s beyond me that apparently from the federal government, the Homeland Security director herself, has already determined who this person was, what their motive was, and they hadn’t even been taken out of the vehicle,” he said.

Video footage of the incident reveals a different sequence of events than described in official statements. The recording shows an officer positioned near the front-left corner of the woman’s SUV while another officer attempts to open the vehicle door. As the driver steers right—away from both officers—and begins to move, one agent fires at least three shots at close range. The footage shows no officers in the path of the vehicle when it accelerated before crashing into parked cars.

Despite the visual evidence, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem characterized the incident as an “act of domestic terrorism” within an hour of its occurrence. During a press briefing in Texas, Noem claimed, “Our ICE officers were out in enforcement action, they got stuck in the snow because of the adverse weather that is in Minneapolis.” She further alleged that “a woman attacked them and those surrounding them and attempted to run them over and ram them with her vehicle.”

This account has been disputed not only by the video evidence—which shows streets clear of snow and no vehicles appearing “stuck”—but also by Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, who forcefully rejected the Department of Homeland Security’s official statement.

“They are already trying to spin this as an act of self-defense. Having seen the video myself, I want to tell everybody directly—that is bullshit,” Frey stated. “This was an agent recklessly using power that resulted in somebody getting killed. Your only reason for being in our city is to create some kind of safety, and you are doing the opposite.”

The incident comes amid heightened tensions surrounding immigration enforcement actions nationwide and raises significant questions about the use of deadly force by federal agents. Local officials continue to challenge the federal narrative of events, pointing to video evidence that appears to contradict statements from both Trump and Department of Homeland Security leadership.

The shooting has ignited debates about federal jurisdiction, immigration enforcement tactics, and accountability in cases involving deadly force. An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting is ongoing.
