A wave of fraudulent mailings designed to mimic official state correspondence is targeting Indiana residents and business owners, according to a warning issued this week by the Indiana State Comptroller’s office.

The deceptive letters, which bear unauthorized logos that appear official at first glance, demand recipients take immediate action. Officials have expressed concern that these sophisticated forgeries could potentially defraud unsuspecting Hoosiers who believe they are responding to legitimate government communications.

“These scammers are becoming increasingly sophisticated in their attempts to impersonate government agencies,” said a spokesperson for the Indiana State Comptroller’s office. “The fraudulent mailings are designed specifically to create a false sense of urgency, which is a common tactic used to pressure people into making hasty decisions.”

The Comptroller’s office has outlined several key identifiers that distinguish authentic communications from fraudulent ones. Legitimate correspondence from the office will always include the official Indiana state seal and list a return address of 200 W. Washington Street in Indianapolis. Additionally, official mailings contain proper contact information that recipients can use to verify the document’s authenticity.

Perhaps most importantly, officials emphasized that the Comptroller’s Office never solicits personal payments through mail correspondence – a critical distinction that can help residents immediately identify fraudulent attempts.

This scam appears to be part of a broader trend targeting state residents across the country. Government impersonation schemes have increased significantly in recent years, with the Federal Trade Commission reporting that Americans lost more than $445 million to government impersonation scams in 2022 alone.

Indiana has been particularly active in combating various forms of fraud. Last year, the state attorney general’s office handled over 5,000 consumer complaints related to various scams, with government impersonation ranking among the top categories.

Financial security experts note that these types of scams often target vulnerable populations, including elderly residents and small business owners who may be especially concerned about maintaining compliance with government regulations.

“Small business owners are particularly vulnerable because they typically handle multiple regulatory requirements and may fear potential penalties for non-compliance,” explained Dr. Emily Richards, a cybersecurity professor at Indiana University. “When they receive official-looking correspondence demanding immediate action, the natural impulse is to comply rather than risk potential consequences.”

The Indiana State Comptroller’s office has advised residents who receive suspicious mail to take several precautionary steps. Recipients should not respond to the correspondence or send any money as requested. Instead, they should contact the Comptroller’s office directly using the official contact information available on the state’s website to verify any purported communications.

State officials are working with postal inspectors to identify the sources of the fraudulent mailings. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have not yet disclosed how many Indiana residents may have received the deceptive letters or fallen victim to the scam.

This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of verifying the legitimacy of official-looking documents, particularly those requesting financial information or payment. Consumer advocates recommend that individuals familiarize themselves with how government agencies typically communicate and what information they would legitimately request.

Indiana residents who believe they have received fraudulent correspondence are encouraged to report it to both the Indiana State Comptroller’s office and the Federal Trade Commission’s fraud reporting system to help authorities track and combat these schemes.
