Former Indian cricketer Shikhar Dhawan has strongly refuted fabricated quotes circulating on social media regarding his personal life, particularly comments allegedly made about his remarriage plans.

The 38-year-old opening batsman took to Instagram on Thursday to address what he described as “fake news” being spread using his name. Dhawan shared a screenshot of the false report alongside a forceful denial, making it clear that he had never made such statements.

“I’ve come across this fake news circulating with my name. I never made any such statements. It’s completely false,” Dhawan wrote on his Instagram story. The cricket star appeared visibly frustrated by the misrepresentation, emphasizing that media outlets should verify information before publishing stories attributed to public figures.

The false report in question suggested Dhawan had spoken about his divorce from ex-wife Aesha Mukerji and made comments about potential remarriage. Dhawan and Mukerji, who were married for eight years, finalized their divorce in 2023 after separating in 2021. The couple shares a son, Zoravar.

Dhawan’s personal life has attracted significant media attention since his divorce became public. The cricketer has previously expressed concerns about limited access to his son, who lives with Mukerji in Australia. In a heartfelt social media post last December, Dhawan shared his emotional struggle over being separated from Zoravar, particularly during the holiday season.

“It’s been a year since I saw you in person, and now, for almost three months, I’ve been trying to reach you,” Dhawan wrote at the time, addressing his son. “Numerous attempts to connect via video calls have been met with no response.”

The fabrication of quotes regarding such sensitive personal matters appears to have particularly angered the cricketer, who has generally maintained dignity and restraint when discussing his family situation publicly.

Dhawan’s cricket career has spanned over a decade, with the left-handed batsman representing India in 34 Tests, 167 One Day Internationals, and 68 T20 Internationals. Known for his aggressive batting style and iconic “thigh-five” celebration, he has amassed over 10,000 runs in international cricket.

Though no longer part of India’s national team setup, Dhawan remains active in domestic cricket and the Indian Premier League (IPL), where he most recently captained Punjab Kings. His presence in the IPL has kept him in the public eye, making him a frequent subject of media coverage both for his sporting achievements and personal life.

This incident highlights the growing problem of misinformation in sports journalism, particularly on social media platforms where unverified quotes and stories can spread rapidly. For high-profile athletes like Dhawan, such false reporting can have significant personal consequences and damage their public image.

Cricket analysts note that Dhawan has always maintained a relatively private personal life despite his celebrity status. Harsha Bhogle, prominent cricket commentator, recently observed that “Dhawan has handled personal challenges with remarkable grace throughout his career.”

The proliferation of fabricated quotes comes at a time when many retired cricketers are expanding their media presence through commentary, podcasts, and social media. This environment creates fertile ground for misattribution and out-of-context statements.

Dhawan’s firm response serves as a reminder of the responsibility media outlets have when reporting on public figures, especially regarding sensitive personal matters. Sports journalists and cricket fans have largely supported Dhawan’s stance, with many calling for greater accountability in reporting.

As the cricketer continues his career in domestic leagues, he has made it clear that he will not tolerate false narratives about his personal life being spread in his name.
