Former Red Bull mechanic Calum Nicholas has been forced to publicly confirm he is alive after false reports of his death circulated on social media platforms.

Nicholas, who served as a senior engine technician at Red Bull for ten years before transitioning to an ambassadorial role with the Formula 1 team, addressed the rumors directly on his X (formerly Twitter) account after receiving concerned messages from followers.

“This is an odd thing to have to tweet,” Nicholas wrote. “I woke up this morning to a few messages from people who’d seen a Facebook post claiming I had died. This is factually incorrect. To the disappointment of many, I’m sure, I am very much still alive (at least, physically).”

The former mechanic maintained his sense of humor despite the unsettling situation, adding: “I am going skiing today though, so there’s hope for you yet. Have a great day. Don’t believe everything you read on the internet.”

Since leaving his hands-on role with the championship-winning team, Nicholas has built a growing public profile through the publication of his memoir, “Life in the Pitlane.” The book chronicles his decade of experience working at the highest level of motorsport and has led to increased media appearances where he shares insider perspectives on Formula 1.

The incident highlights the broader issue of misinformation on social media platforms, where false reports can spread rapidly without verification. It also points to Nicholas’s rising profile within the Formula 1 community, as his experiences have resonated with fans eager to understand the behind-the-scenes aspects of the sport.

This case of false information comes amid growing concerns about social media abuse in Formula 1. The sport has recently grappled with more serious instances of online harassment, most notably following the 2025 Qatar Grand Prix when Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli faced death threats after making a racing error that benefited McLaren’s Lando Norris.

The situation was exacerbated when Red Bull personnel, including sporting director Gianpiero Lambiase and advisor Helmut Marko, suggested Antonelli had made the mistake deliberately. Although Red Bull later retracted these claims and issued an apology, acknowledging there was no evidence to support the accusation, the damage had already been done.

Mercedes subsequently investigated the online abuse directed at their young driver and identified more than 1,100 comments across Antonelli’s social media accounts that were classified as “severe or suspect.” The incident prompted renewed calls for better protections against online abuse in the sport.

Formula 1 has been working to address these issues through various initiatives aimed at promoting respectful online behavior. Teams and drivers have increasingly spoken out against abusive comments, emphasizing the human impact of such messages.

Nicholas’s experience, while less severe than the threats faced by Antonelli, underscores how social media can be used to spread false information about public figures in the sport. It also demonstrates how even retired team members remain part of the Formula 1 community and can find themselves subjected to online misinformation.

As Formula 1 continues to expand its global audience, particularly through digital platforms and social media, the challenge of managing online behavior and ensuring accurate information remains significant for everyone involved in the sport.
