Police have launched a formal investigation into former gangster Park Seung-mo following allegations that he spread false information linking Democratic Party leader Lee Jae-myung to organized crime activities.
The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency’s Serious Crime Investigation Division confirmed Tuesday that it has initiated the probe after receiving a complaint from Lee’s party earlier this month. The complaint accuses Park of violating election laws by disseminating misinformation during a politically sensitive period.
Park, who previously served time for various criminal activities, gained public attention when he appeared at a press conference organized by the ruling People Power Party on August 27. During the event, Park claimed that Lee had maintained close ties with organized crime figures and had received illegal political funds from criminal organizations during his time as mayor of Seongnam city.
“We are thoroughly investigating whether Park’s statements constitute spreading false information with the intent to influence an election outcome,” said a police official who requested anonymity due to the ongoing nature of the investigation. The official added that investigators are reviewing video footage of the press conference and collecting additional evidence.
The allegations come at a particularly contentious moment in South Korean politics, with Lee Jae-myung having emerged as a prominent opposition figure following his narrow defeat in the 2022 presidential election to current President Yoon Suk-yeol. Lee has consistently denied any connection to criminal organizations and characterized the accusations as politically motivated smears.
Democratic Party spokesperson Kim Min-seok condemned the ruling party’s involvement in the press conference. “This is a desperate attempt by the People Power Party to discredit Lee Jae-myung through unsubstantiated claims from a convicted criminal,” Kim said in a statement. “The timing of these allegations, just months before crucial parliamentary elections, reveals their true political motivation.”
The People Power Party has defended its decision to provide Park with a platform, arguing that the public has a right to know about potential criminal connections of political leaders. Party representative Chung Jin-suk stated, “If there is evidence of ties between politicians and organized crime, it should be brought to light regardless of political affiliation.”
Legal experts note that South Korea’s election laws include strict provisions against spreading false information during election periods. Violations can result in fines of up to 30 million won (approximately $22,000) and potential imprisonment for up to five years.
Park’s criminal background has added another layer of complexity to the case. Having served multiple prison sentences for extortion and assault, his credibility as a witness has been questioned by legal analysts. However, his firsthand knowledge of criminal organizations in the Seongnam area during Lee’s mayoral tenure makes his claims difficult to dismiss outright.
This investigation unfolds against the backdrop of increasing political polarization in South Korea, where legal battles and criminal investigations involving political figures have become increasingly common. Lee himself is currently facing separate investigations related to development projects during his time as mayor.
Political analyst Song Min-soon from Seoul National University suggests this pattern reflects a troubling trend in Korean politics. “We’re seeing the criminalization of politics, where legal systems are increasingly weaponized for political advantage,” Song explained. “This creates a dangerous cycle where each side uses criminal allegations to target opponents.”
The police have not provided a timeline for concluding their investigation but indicated they would proceed with caution given the politically sensitive nature of the case. They plan to interview Park and possibly summon representatives from the People Power Party who organized the press conference.
As the investigation progresses, it is expected to remain a contentious issue in South Korean politics, potentially influencing public opinion ahead of the National Assembly elections scheduled for April 2024.
