Pentagon Chief Hegseth Under Fire for False Claims During Congressional Testimony
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth faced mounting criticism this week after making multiple false statements during his sworn testimony before congressional committees, raising concerns about the Pentagon chief’s credibility and transparency.
During back-to-back appearances on Capitol Hill last week, Hegseth repeatedly attempted to deflect tough questioning by making inaccurate comparisons to previous Democratic administrations. When pressed about his controversial mass firings at the Defense Department, Hegseth claimed, “Under Barack Obama, 197 general officers were removed. So this is not something specific to this administration.”
The New York Times has since reported that this claim “has no basis in fact,” with defense experts unable to substantiate the figure Hegseth provided under oath.
Perhaps more troubling was Hegseth’s response when questioned about the potential deployment of U.S. troops to voting precincts for the upcoming midterm elections. Rather than directly addressing the query, the former Fox News host pivoted to allegations about the previous administration.
“I will note that in 2024, troops were — that was Joe Biden, by the way, Joe Biden — were deployed to polling locations in 15 states,” Hegseth told the House Armed Services Committee. He repeated the claim almost verbatim during his testimony before the Senate Armed Services Committee the following day.
CNN’s fact-checking revealed this statement to be entirely false. The network contacted the states in question and found that National Guard activations related to the 2024 election were ordered by state governors, not President Biden. Furthermore, none of the 12 states that responded to CNN’s inquiries reported deploying troops to polling locations.
Instead, these National Guard personnel were tasked with behind-the-scenes responsibilities such as election cybersecurity support or serving as internal liaisons. Some states confirmed their National Guard wasn’t activated for election purposes at all.
This pattern of misleading statements raises serious questions about Hegseth’s approach to congressional oversight. As Pentagon chief, his testimony carries significant weight regarding national security matters and the operational readiness of America’s armed forces.
The controversy emerges at a particularly sensitive time for the Defense Department, which faces international challenges across multiple fronts while simultaneously implementing substantial internal changes under the new administration. Hegseth’s credibility issues could potentially undermine confidence in Pentagon leadership at a critical juncture.
Defense policy analysts note that Hegseth’s falsehoods weren’t minor misstatements but specific, detailed claims that he repeated across multiple hearings. His assertions about troop deployments during the 2024 election were particularly concerning given the politically charged nature of election security discussions.
Legal experts are now debating whether Hegseth’s statements could constitute perjury or making false statements to Congress, both serious offenses. While the Defense Department has yet to issue a formal correction or clarification regarding the secretary’s testimony, pressure is mounting for Hegseth to address these discrepancies.
The incident also raises questions about the Pentagon’s internal fact-checking processes for congressional testimony. Traditionally, cabinet officials undergo rigorous preparation with subject matter experts before appearing before oversight committees precisely to avoid such factual errors.
As scrutiny intensifies, lawmakers from both parties have called for Hegseth to clarify his statements and provide accurate information about his plans regarding potential military involvement in future elections—a matter of significant public interest given the heightened political tensions surrounding election administration.
The Pentagon has yet to respond to requests for comment on how the secretary prepared his testimony or whether he plans to correct the record before Congress.
