The recent controversy surrounding an alleged leadership crisis within Nigeria’s Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been mischaracterized, according to Southeast National Vice Chairman Ray Nnaji, who insists the party remains stable despite ongoing legal disputes.

In a press briefing held in Enugu over the weekend, Nnaji addressed widespread speculation about leadership instability, attributing the rumors to misinterpretations of recent court judgments, particularly a Supreme Court ruling concerning the party’s contested national convention.

“There is no leadership vacuum. Our group is in control of the party secretariat, and we are functioning fully as a party,” Nnaji emphasized, rejecting claims that suggest the apex court’s decision had invalidated the party’s current leadership structure.

The controversy, he explained, originated from a legal challenge to the PDP’s planned national convention in Ibadan. Aggrieved party members had approached the court arguing that essential procedural requirements—including conducting state and zonal congresses—had not been fulfilled before scheduling the national gathering.

According to Nnaji, the court had established specific conditions that needed to be met before the convention could proceed. However, a faction within the party moved forward with the event after securing an ex parte order from another court, an action that Nnaji characterized as a clear violation of an existing court directive.

This procedural breach prompted the Federal High Court to nullify the convention entirely, a decision that was subsequently upheld by the Court of Appeal. The Supreme Court later affirmed these rulings in a split decision by dismissing the appeal.

“From the Federal High Court to the Supreme Court, the position has been consistent. So, there is nothing difficult in interpreting the judgment,” Nnaji stated, emphasizing that the courts had maintained a clear position that disobedience to valid judicial orders cannot be condoned.

The PDP, one of Nigeria’s major political parties, has faced increasing internal tensions since its defeat in the 2023 presidential election. These divisions have raised concerns about the party’s ability to present a united front in upcoming electoral contests and maintain its traditional strongholds, particularly in the Southeast region where it has historically enjoyed significant support.

Addressing these concerns, Nnaji dismissed suggestions of factional camps within the PDP, insisting that the recognized leadership continues to operate from the party’s national headquarters and maintains control of party machinery across the country.

On the subject of reconciliation, the PDP chieftain expressed willingness to make personal sacrifices for the greater good of the party. “If stepping aside will bring peace and help the party grow, I am ready. But nobody will be allowed to destroy the party from outside,” he affirmed, suggesting openness to compromise while maintaining firm boundaries.

Nnaji downplayed fears that internal disagreements might diminish the PDP’s appeal in the Southeast, describing such concerns as exaggerated. He likened the current situation to normal disagreements within a family structure—inevitable but ultimately resolvable.

While acknowledging that some members had defected to other political parties, Nnaji expressed confidence that many would eventually return as political dynamics evolve and the party reasserts its position. “Our focus is to rebuild and reposition the PDP to be stronger. Our doors remain open to those who wish to come back,” he added.

The PDP vice chairman also revealed that despite the controversies, the party has maintained its regular activities, including consultations and preparations for future elections. He concluded by noting that ultimately, the Nigerian electorate would determine the party’s strength through their votes in upcoming elections.
