FBI Director Under Fire as Bombshell Report Alleges Drinking Problems and Paranoia

FBI Director Kash Patel has vehemently denied explosive allegations published in The Atlantic magazine that claim he struggles with excessive drinking and paranoia about being fired, behavior that reportedly has alarmed officials within the nation’s top law enforcement agency.

According to the extensive report published Friday evening, concerns about Patel’s conduct have reached such levels that some FBI officials worry about the bureau’s readiness during a potential national crisis. “That’s what keeps me up at night,” one unnamed official told The Atlantic.

The magazine details several troubling incidents, including an alleged April 10 episode where Patel reportedly experienced what sources described as a paranoid “freak-out” over a computer system issue. During this incident, Patel allegedly believed the technical problem signaled his imminent termination and began frantically calling aides and allies. News of the episode reportedly spread quickly through Washington, prompting calls to the White House questioning FBI leadership.

Most concerning are allegations regarding Patel’s drinking habits. The Atlantic claims the FBI director has been known to drink to the point of visible intoxication at clubs in Washington D.C. and his home city of Las Vegas—behavior that would violate FBI conduct standards and potentially create security vulnerabilities for the nation’s top law enforcement official.

Sources told the magazine that early in Patel’s tenure, meetings had to be rescheduled to later in the day to accommodate his nighttime drinking. On multiple occasions, his security detail allegedly had difficulty waking him due to apparent intoxication, with one incident reportedly necessitating a request for emergency “breaching equipment” typically used in SWAT operations.

FBI officials and Trump administration members have reportedly questioned whether alcohol influenced certain missteps by the director, including a premature announcement following the shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk that a “subject” was in custody. The individual was later released, and a different suspect, Tyler Robinson, was ultimately arrested.

The report suggests President Trump himself, a teetotaler whose brother died from alcoholism-related health issues, expressed displeasure after Patel was seen publicly consuming beer with members of the U.S. Olympic hockey team.

In a forceful rebuttal, both Patel and the FBI have categorically denied the allegations. The director has vowed legal action against the magazine and reporter Sarah Fitzpatrick, suggesting in a post on social media platform X that the article meets the legal standard for defamation.

“See you and your entire entourage of false reporting in court,” Patel wrote. “But do keep at it with the fake news, actual malice standard is now what some would call a legal lay up.”

The FBI’s communications team characterized the article as “completely false at a nearly 100 percent clip” and claimed the bureau was given just two hours to respond to the numerous allegations before publication.

Erica Knight, an adviser to Patel, defended the director’s work ethic, stating he has worked more days than his predecessors. Knight claimed the magazine’s reporting was based on allegations that “every real D.C. reporter chased, couldn’t verify, and passed on.”

Jesse Binnall, Patel’s attorney, shared a letter allegedly sent to The Atlantic before publication, arguing the reporting relied “solely on vague, unattributed sourcing” and didn’t allow sufficient time for the FBI to provide exculpatory information. Binnall also drew parallels to 2025 MSNBC claims about Patel’s drinking that have prompted ongoing litigation.

The White House has publicly stood by Patel. “Under President Trump and Director Patel’s leadership at the FBI, crime across the country has plummeted to the lowest level in more than 100 years and many high profile criminals have been put behind bars,” White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a statement. “Director Patel remains a critical player on the Administration’s law and order team.”

Fitzpatrick, the Atlantic reporter, has defended her work. “I stand by every word of this reporting,” she told MS NOW on Friday. She emphasized that her story was based on more than two dozen interviews, including with current and former FBI officials—particularly notable given Patel’s aggressive pursuit of suspected leakers within the bureau, including through polygraph testing.

“These are not the types of people who are willing to speak out outside of the FBI, especially right now,” Fitzpatrick added. “For it to be this level of alarm, this is people genuinely concerned that America is in danger as a result of this conduct.”
