Pakistan’s officials have denounced what they call a coordinated disinformation campaign that falsely linked their country to Sunday’s deadly Bondi Beach shooting in Australia, which claimed 15 lives during Hanukkah celebrations.

Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, speaking at a news conference in Islamabad on Wednesday, forcefully rejected claims circulating online that one of the attackers held Pakistani citizenship. The minister specifically accused India of orchestrating the spread of these false narratives in the aftermath of the antisemitic attack.

“Almost immediately after this tragic incident, misleading information began circulating across social media platforms,” Tarar said. He noted that posts falsely identifying one suspect as a Pakistani national named Naveed Akram gained rapid traction online and were subsequently picked up by some media outlets without proper fact-checking.

According to Tarar, subsequent investigations, including confirmation from Indian police authorities, established that one attacker, Sajid Akram, was from India, while his 24-year-old son, Naveed Akram, who was also implicated in the attack, was born in Australia.

The minister explained that the misinformation appears to have originated from a case of mistaken identity. An uninvolved Pakistani man with the same name, Naveed Akram, resides in Sydney and has since become collateral damage in what Pakistani officials describe as a “malicious and organized campaign.”

“This innocent individual has released a video statement denying any involvement and pleading with the public not to associate him with the attack,” Tarar said. “How do we restore the situation to where it was before the Bondi Beach attack?” he asked, highlighting the challenges of combating viral misinformation once it spreads.

The Pakistani government has called on media outlets that published the unverified reports to issue formal apologies. Tarar indicated that Pakistan has not yet decided whether to pursue legal action against those responsible for spreading the false information.

The incident underscores the increasingly complex landscape of international information warfare, where misinformation can spread globally within hours, potentially inflaming existing tensions between nations. The rapid dissemination of unverified claims following major incidents has become a significant challenge for governments and media organizations alike.

The allegations come against a backdrop of historically fraught relations between Pakistan and India. The nuclear-armed neighbors have fought three wars since gaining independence from British colonial rule in 1947, with most conflicts centered on the disputed Himalayan territory of Kashmir. As recently as May, the two nations approached the brink of war before U.S. President Donald Trump helped broker a ceasefire.

Indian officials had not responded to Pakistan’s accusations at the time of reporting.

The Bondi Beach attack, which targeted Jewish individuals celebrating Hanukkah, has drawn international condemnation. In his remarks, Tarar emphasized that Pakistan’s leadership strongly condemned the shooting, expressing solidarity with the victims and their families.

This incident highlights the increasing challenge that governments face in managing international perceptions in the digital age, where misinformation can quickly shape public opinion and potentially exacerbate diplomatic tensions. It also demonstrates how major tragic events can become fodder for geopolitical information campaigns, complicating an already sensitive international situation.
