Christian Band Newsboys Files Federal Lawsuit Challenging Sexual Assault Allegations

The Christian rock band Newsboys has filed a federal lawsuit vigorously disputing allegations that a woman was raped by a crew member in 2014, claiming police evidence contradicts the victim’s account.

The lawsuit, filed this week in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Tennessee, directly challenges reporting by The Roys Report (TRR), which published articles in 2025 and 2026 detailing allegations against Newsboys frontman Michael Tait and a lighting technician named Matt Brewer.

According to court documents, the Newsboys’ legal team argues that TRR’s reporting mischaracterized a 2014 incident involving a woman identified as “Nicole,” who was 23 years old at the time and working for Nick Hall’s Pulse Evangelism organization.

The band’s lawsuit specifically contests Nicole’s claim that she was drugged by Tait and subsequently assaulted by Brewer. The legal filing cites a Fargo Police report that allegedly states Nicole told authorities shortly after the incident that any interaction with Brewer would have been consensual.

“There is no indication of her being drugged in any way for this to have happened,” the lawsuit quotes from the police report. The band’s attorneys further claim this crucial information was available to reporters but omitted from the published articles.

The legal action represents a significant escalation in a controversy that has rocked the Christian music industry since TRR’s initial reporting on June 19, 2025. That report included hotel surveillance footage, police documents, and witness testimonies supporting Nicole’s allegations.

In TRR’s original coverage, Nicole described waking up on a bathroom floor feeling physically incapacitated. “My body was so heavy I could hardly move. I hear Matt Brewer’s voice, and I remember [Tait] being in there,” she told reporters. She recounted fragmented memories of sexual assault but acknowledged gaps in her recollection.

The Newsboys’ lawsuit specifically challenges the drugging allegation as scientifically implausible, arguing that “a person incapacitated by such a drug does not have ‘selective recall'” as Nicole described. The filing suggests her partial memories are “materially inconsistent with the effects of an incapacitating substance.”

However, TRR’s investigation included corroborating testimony from Elizabeth Chan, a professional drummer who was present that night. Chan, who has since performed with mainstream artists like Carrie Underwood and Keith Urban, provided an account supporting aspects of Nicole’s allegations.

The case highlights the complex intersection of celebrity, religious institutions, and sexual assault allegations. Tait, who previously performed with the pioneering Christian rap-rock group DC Talk before joining the Newsboys in 2009, has maintained a prominent position in contemporary Christian music for decades.

The lawsuit represents a high-stakes legal battle for the band, which has sold millions of albums and garnered multiple Grammy nominations throughout their career. The allegations have created significant turmoil within the Christian entertainment industry, with various organizations reassessing their relationships with the artists involved.

Legal experts note that defamation cases involving public figures face a high bar for success, requiring proof of actual malice or reckless disregard for the truth. The Newsboys’ lawsuit will likely hinge on whether the band can demonstrate TRR knowingly published false information or showed reckless disregard for contradictory evidence.

As the case proceeds through the federal court system, both the band and the publication have limited their public comments, with representatives from both sides acknowledging the sensitive nature of the allegations and the importance of allowing the legal process to unfold.
