MSNBC Hosts Condemn ‘False Flag’ Conspiracy Theories After White House Correspondents’ Dinner Shooting
MSNBC hosts have spoken out against what they describe as “disturbing” conspiracy theories circulating online that claim the shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner was staged.
During a segment on MSNBC’s “The Weekend,” host Eugene Daniels expressed his dismay at seeing social media posts suggesting the incident was orchestrated. “One thing that I’m disturbed by as we woke up this morning is seeing folks on the internet say that this was a false flag, that we are basically all in cahoots to do, to say that this was staged,” said Daniels.
The shooting occurred Saturday night at the annual media event, which featured former President Donald Trump’s attendance for the first time during either of his presidential terms. Before the dinner commenced, Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, and several administration officials were evacuated, bringing the event to an abrupt halt.
Daniels, a former White House Correspondents’ Association president, described the traumatic experience of those present at the event. “As someone who, for all of us who was in the room, who had to jump on the ground, who had to text our family and friends and tell them that we were okay, calling our moms like so many people in this country have done for decades, to see people say those kinds of things, it is frustrating, and it’s disturbing,” he said.
In the aftermath of the shooting, several left-wing commentators took to social media platforms to suggest the incident might have been staged. Twitch streamer Hasan Piker wrote on X, “[S]hooting at the whcd and all these cultists INSTANTLY start talking about trumps ballroom.” Former MSNBC host Katie Phang questioned on BlueSky, “Trump is just lah-dee-dah fine after another alleged assassination attempt & he demands: ‘LET THE SHOW GO ON’. The ‘SHOW’?”
Author Don Winslow went further, posting, “In the simplest terms…If you believe that BS last night…If you accept that utterly ridiculous story and ignore the 27 wild and incomprehensible inconsistencies…You are stupid, stupid, STUPID.”
Jonathan Capehart, another MSNBC host, noted during the segment that while conspiracy theories typically emerge from right-wing circles, he was seeing an unusual trend of left-leaning accounts promoting similar narratives about the shooting. “I’m hearing that from my social media pages, from people on the left, also thinking that this was staged, that this was a false flag, that this was something being done on purpose,” Capehart said.
He suggested the widespread mistrust across the political spectrum points to deeper issues in American society. “If it’s coming from the right and it’s coming from the left, these conspiracy theories, it says to me that there feels to be a lack of trust in this country,” Capehart observed.
Law enforcement has identified the suspect as 31-year-old Cole Allen of Torrance, California. According to authorities, Allen had prepared a manifesto outlining his intentions and had shared anti-Trump and anti-Christian content on social media. Senior federal law enforcement sources have confirmed to Fox News that he intended to target Trump administration officials at the event.
The incident represents the latest in a series of security threats at high-profile political events, raising concerns about the safety of public figures and the increasing polarization of American politics. Security protocols at major political gatherings will likely face renewed scrutiny following this incident.
Daniels emphasized the importance of accurate reporting in the face of misinformation, noting that journalists at the event were working diligently to keep the public informed with factual updates about the shooting as details emerged.
The White House and the White House Correspondents’ Association have not yet commented on the conspiracy theories surrounding the incident.
