Misinformation Spreads Following Bondi Beach Terror Attack as Innocent Men Falsely Accused

In the wake of the deadly Bondi Beach terror attack that claimed at least 15 lives and injured dozens more, a flood of false information has circulated on social media platforms, wrongly identifying innocent individuals as the perpetrators.

Australian authorities have confirmed the actual attackers were father and son Sajid Akram, 50, and Naveed Akram, 24, who opened fire at a Jewish event in a beachside park on December 14, 2025. Sajid was killed by police during the attack, while his Australian-born son Naveed remains hospitalized.

Despite clear identification by law enforcement and credible media sources, misleading posts quickly spread across social media platforms, dragging uninvolved individuals into the tragedy and potentially endangering their safety.

One widely shared Facebook post incorrectly claimed one attacker was “Pakistani Naveed Akram” while falsely stating the second gunman was Algerian. The post featured a photograph of a man wearing a Pakistan cricket jersey alongside an image of the actual shooter, Naveed Akram.

A reverse image search revealed the cricket jersey photo was taken from an innocent man’s private Facebook profile posted in 2019. The wrongfully identified individual has since made public statements denying any involvement.

“This photo being circulated is NOT the person involved in the Bondi incident,” he wrote on social media. “That is me, and I am completely innocent and have no connection whatsoever to what happened. Someone is falsely using my picture, which is putting my safety, reputation, and well-being at risk.”

Other misleading posts have circulated images of a man they falsely claim is “Khaled al-Nablusi,” described as “another Muslim migrant” and “a Lebanese national of Palestinian descent.” The same images were previously shared with claims the individual was “Marzuq al-Bunni,” allegedly involved in a U.S. Army base shooting in August 2025.

Analysis shows these images are manipulated photos of a writer whose legitimate pictures were published in an online magazine. While a beard was digitally added to some images, the face and hair match the writer’s published photos, confirming this is another case of mistaken identity.

Perhaps most troubling is a fabricated narrative claiming Naveed Akram’s real name is “David Cohen” and that he is “JEWISH, FROM ISRAEL!” These posts include what appears to be a screenshot of a Facebook profile as supposed evidence.

However, the alleged profile contains numerous inconsistencies that suggest it was artificially generated. The layout doesn’t match authentic Facebook formatting, with misspelled navigation tabs like “Eeopis” instead of “Photos” and buttons reading “Ernsage” rather than “Add friend.” A purported bar mitzvah photo in the fake profile shows obvious manipulation, with a microphone appearing to float in mid-air.

Australian authorities have repeatedly confirmed Naveed Akram is an Australian-born citizen with no connection to Israel.

This pattern of misinformation follows a troubling trend seen after major violent incidents worldwide, where social media becomes a breeding ground for false accusations that can lead to harassment and potential violence against innocent individuals. The rapid spread of such unverified claims highlights the ongoing challenges of combating misinformation in crisis situations.

Social media companies face renewed pressure to implement stronger safeguards against the spread of false information during breaking news events, particularly when misidentifications could lead to real-world harm for those falsely accused.

Law enforcement officials continue to urge the public to rely on official sources for information regarding the attack as the investigation continues, warning that sharing unverified claims not only impedes their work but can seriously impact innocent lives.
