In a new controversy surrounding the University of Michigan’s athletic department, former football coach Sherrone Moore faces allegations that he failed to properly handle a sexual misconduct complaint against former staffer LaTroy Lewis.
The accusations emerged after Lewis, who recently joined the Atlanta Falcons as an assistant defensive line coach, was dismissed by the NFL team on Friday amid an investigation by Ann Arbor police. Authorities confirmed they are looking into allegations regarding a sexual assault reported to have occurred on December 5, 2024.
Karen Truszkowski, the attorney representing the woman who made the allegations, told CBS News Detroit that her client reported the assault to Moore, who allegedly failed to take appropriate action. Truszkowski further claims that Moore subsequently harassed the woman instead of addressing her concerns.
Moore’s attorney, Ellen Michaels, has firmly denied these accusations, stating, “Sherrone Moore did not fail to report misconduct, did not reward wrongdoing, and did not harass anyone. These claims are false.”
Lewis, through his attorney Fabiola A. Galguera, has also denied the allegations, telling the Detroit Free Press that he “intends to fiercely fight these false allegations.” Lewis worked as an assistant at the University of Michigan before being hired by the University of Toledo in 2025, and subsequently by the Falcons earlier this month.
According to Truszkowski, the woman met Lewis through a dating app in July 2024, developing a long-distance relationship before they met in person in December 2024, when the first alleged assault occurred. Truszkowski claims Lewis assaulted the woman again in January 2025, an incident that was also reported to Moore.
Truszkowski, who also represents Brenda Tracy in the ongoing case against former Michigan State University coach Mel Tucker, said her client decided to come forward after learning of Moore’s firing in December 2025 and his subsequent legal troubles.
“She certainly was taking notice of what was happening and thought that it was important for her to come forward and address it,” Truszkowski stated. The attorney added that they have not yet taken any legal action against Moore or Lewis.
This development comes amid broader turmoil in Michigan’s athletic department. Moore was fired on December 10, 2025, following a university investigation that revealed he had engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member. Hours after his dismissal, Moore was arrested for allegedly entering the woman’s home without permission and threatening self-harm. He now faces charges of home invasion, breaking and entering, and stalking.
In response to Moore’s firing, the University of Michigan announced a comprehensive investigation into the athletic department’s culture and practices. The Lewis allegations add another layer of complexity to this ongoing probe.
No criminal charges have yet been filed against Lewis related to the sexual assault allegations. When contacted for comment, Paul Corliss, assistant vice president for Public Affairs and Internal Communications at the University of Michigan, expressed concern about the allegations.
“These allegations are deeply concerning. As we have noted, the University launched an investigation of the circumstances and conduct leading to Sherrone Moore’s firing, as well as a broader culture review of the Athletic Department,” Corliss stated. He encouraged anyone with relevant information to contact the law firm conducting the investigation at umconcerns@jenner.com, adding that the university would share more information when the investigation is completed.
The case highlights ongoing concerns about how universities handle reports of sexual misconduct within athletic departments, particularly when they involve staff members. It also raises questions about accountability in reporting structures and the responsibilities of head coaches when such allegations surface.
